Movie : Pocket Money

A hard luck, not so bright cowboy heads down to Mexico to bring back some rodeo stock for a businessman who’s a little sketchy. He hooks up with an old buddy in Mexico who is going to help broker the deal. So we follow Jim and Leonard around in Leonard’s beat up old Buick as they turn this job into a shit show. They basically chase their tails trying to put the deal together. Encountering roadblock after roadblock, some put in their way by the locals, by the people they’re working for and by themselves.

Another one of those offbeat films that CB likes. Nothing flashy or very exciting, just our two main characters pissing around in Mexico. It’s a light film that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Director Stuart Rosenberg keeps it that way. I always like the look of these films (Laszlo Kovacs). There’s some good dialouge written by Terrence Malick. Rosenberg teams up with Paul Newman again and brings a few more cast members from Cool Hand Luke, Wayne Rogers and the great Strother Martin (An absolute CB fave) who play the sleazeballs who hire Newman.

Paul Newman and Lee Marvin play the two friends. Newman the short fused, worst businessman in the world and Marvin his connection in Mexico who’s a little sketchy himself. A bullshitter. They make a pretty pathetic team barreling around in Marvin’s beat up old Buick (Why does he have to drive around so fast all the time?). I liked their chemistry.

Pocket Money is light and easy going with some funny bits. If you do catch this one don’t take it too seriously because it’s not that type of film. Relax, jump in the Buick convertible, take in the sights and get in on a real bad deal with Jim and Leonard. A couple real sizzlers.

Another one I haven’t seen, CB. Sounds perfect for a Sunday evening.

Yeah it’s one of those off the radar, lets not take ourselves too seriously films. The IQ of the main characters probably wouldn’t add up to a high number. These kinds of films always appeal to me. Plus I like that country. There’s a scene where Newman roughs up Strother Martin. Price of admission. (He gets him back from Cool Hand Luke if you’re familiar)

Yes it’s worth a revisit and good for many reasons. I did a take on it way back. Newman, Kennedy and Martin. Great trio of actors doing good stuff.

Don’t think I knew about this movie. It might be worth seeing just to look at the Buick. Cool car!

Every time Marvin jumps in it. it’s peddle to the metal. Hilarious little bit that got me. The film probably bombed but I found lots to like plus I love those locations.
(Knowing a little about your tastes Neil I would think you would like ‘In Bruges’)

How gory is In Bruges? I can’t take too much gore.

It has it’s share of violence. Nt over done but a few scenes that serve the story. I’m a little forgiving as long as the film is intelligent which this one is. Not a Hallmark production that’s for sure.

The kind of film I might watch on a wintry Saturday afternoon, whilst relaxing after a hard week.

The name rings a bell but I’ve never seen it. Lee Marvin and Paul Newman, eh? Worth it just for that. I read in Wikipedia that they didn’t get along too well. It’d be fun if they tried to outdrink each other and got in a fistfight. And I don’t mean in the movie.

I don’t think Lee was the easiest guy to get along with. Ex service guy who probably didn’t give a shit. Plus the booze factor. You could feel a bit of that booze vibe in the film. I just love these kinds of American movies. Lee just bombing around in his beat up Buick. I love that shit.

Yeah, I’ll need to find that one. Also, I always wish that Newman/Redford had one more good movie in them. I loved ‘Butch’ as well as ‘The Sting.’

I liked Newman. He plays a real dumb bastard in this one. I enjoy Redford directing more than a lot of acting choices he does.
Here’s a good one for you Doc. Certified wild man Oliver Reed and Marvin did a film together and i guess it was a complete piss up. Reed and Keith Moon were drinking buddies. a whole other league of drinking. I really like Marvin’s work. It would have been fun to work with him but probably nuts.

Remember a movie called “Donovan’s Reef?” Set in Hawaii, directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne and Lee Marvin? Now, what must that set have been like?

In that Ford bio I was telling you about. They did a lot of drinking. Ford had an old wooden yacht that they used to disappear on for a drunk.

Yes I’ve heard a few first hand. Ben Gazzara was a beauty. East Coast just like you.
Anyways Doc here’s something cool. I was telling you about my neighbor and passing on your Keith Jarrett piece. His favorite Jazz musician is a guy called Don Shirley. They just made a movie about him. Viggo Mortenson is in it. Does it ever look cool. Right up our alley. ‘Green Book’. Check out the trailer and tell me you don’t want to see that.

Gazzara. East Coast huh? I’d slap him around just for the fuck of it.

Just looked up that movie. Looks pretty interesting. Thanks for the heads up. Never heard of Shirley. Sounds like kind of an obscure guy.

        You sound just like Ben.

You will probably check this movie out before me. I don’t get jacked by to many new releases. This one I am. Subject matter and Viggo is good. My neighbor turned me onto Shirley. Not the Jazz with the edge that I like but he has some good stuff. Funny huh. Obscure guy like this and he’s somebody’s favorite musician. Music moves people and chooses them sometimes. Very cool like we always say.
