Music Single : Calexico – Crystal Frontier

download (2)

The organ holds the note for a few beats and then the song takes off and you can’t help getting swept up in it. What a sound, what a song. These guys are pulling a bunch of styles and making Calexico music. Like a mini soundtrack. Epic sound. Rockin, country, Mexican beat. The horns are fantastic with a great groove carrying the tune. The lyrics create all sorts of images. Like a Sam Peckinpah/Sergio Leone movie. You can feel the heat and the country. A story song that cooks in the Mexican sun.

Calexico are Joey Burns and John Convertino. They came to my notice in Giant Sand, then formed Calexico to make this fantastic music. CB loves it when he hears new sounds that catch his ear. That’s what happened with this song. What a great piece of music. If you’ve never heard them you’re in for a treat, if you have heard them dig it again. This a hit repeat button song. Videos are hit and miss with me. The one below is a hit.

“He finds a ravens head and a rattlers tail”

“Searches for her lost child on the river of tears, on the river of tears”.

Good tune. I love that Mexicana sound. We saw a Latin band at the Lowell Folk Festival and really dug them. I realized that all my years of listening to and loving Santana warmed me up for anything Latin. Note – the first thing I asked myself on hearing this tune was “This should have been a ‘Breaking Bad’ tune. And then two comments in on YouTube, somebody else says the same thing. But it turns out that one of their tunes was used on its sequel, ‘Better Call Saul.’

They are quite prolific and I really dig them. Giant Sand (have a take coming up) the band they emerged from are based out of Tucson and have their finger on this sound and a bunch of others. They can get out there but you know I like that. Yeah they were a no brainer for BB and Saul. Gilligan has an ear for good music.

Big Earl and Falda had to drag me to it. And yes I became a fan. So good on so many levels. You know I keep it positive Doc but so much (pretty well all of it) on that tube thing just doesn’t do it for me but they knew it was my style. The music was one of the things the show got right big time.
(Lets not forget the great band Los Lobos who I know both you and I dig)

My son was watching it so I went back to Netflix and got sucked right in to the show. Bear in mind that the theaters are now full of superhero crap and much of the stuff you and I like has moved to the tube, especially cable and Netflix. BTW, I saw Los Lobos a few months back but didn’t write them up as I had already done a piece on them. They’re coming back to a smaller venue and I might go again, make up for lost time.

BB is like one long feature film. Yeah I’ll be doing something on Los Lobos for sure. They can play any style Doc but man can tey rock out when they feel like it.
They’re one band I’d like to see again. I go way back with Lobos.

They’re here in October. Come down and we’ll go see them. Bring Eart. Falda, Squiggy, Bubba and the whole gang.

If I don’t make it I would be real curious if they are still putting on quality shows.. My buddy named his kid Bubba. I’ll see if he wants to go.

Yeah, they’ve started grabbing onto the scattered Deadhead crowd a little bit. But they still steet comfortably between TexMex and blues better than anyone I know of.

Yeah they’re good. I hooked onto them through The Blasters. Steve Berlin left that band to join L.L. I probably told you all that bullshit before. Lots of good music was coming out of L.A. at that time.

One of my favourites this one. Outstanding tune. I listen to Hot Rail a lot, actually… an album that’s never left me since discovering it. At and Feast of Wire are the high points in their discography.

While I’m talking about films I watched this great little film from your side of the water ‘The Guard’. I’m digging it and the music. Calexico did the soundtrack Strange choice but it worked for me. Yeah they are so good. I’ll probably pop those two you mentioned on the box tomorrow.

Is the the flick with Gleason and Cheadle? If so, I’ve had that on my list for too long.

You ever seen Dead Man’s Shoes? Calexico all over the soundtrack for that, too. In fact, it’s a pretty great soundtrack.

Yes that’s the one. I just looked at the trailer for ‘Shoes’. I’m going to be all over that one thanks. I love that stuff. Just watched ‘Bad Day For the Cut’ Irish film. Liked it a lot.
(Hey I’ve been popping into your site periodically. I see you just added a new take and it looks interesting. I’ll tune into tomorrow.)

Shoes is really incredible filmmaking. I hope you dig it. It’s really quite something.

I have Bad Day For The Cut lined up on my Netflix. I’m planning on consuming that soon – it’s got all the right ingredients.

(Yeah, that was my first post in a while. I’ve got another post I’m working on… I think it’ll be ready in a month or two… haha!).

I can tell I will be into ‘Shoes ‘for sure. I love that gritty stuff. I couldn’t understand half the dialogue in ‘Bad Day’ but heh, I’m Canadian.

I didn’t catch half the dialogue in the trailer and I’m Scottish!

(Thanks, man. I’m gonna try post more regularly… cause I have a few things I want to talk about – one I’m working on now is Sinatra).

I love Sinatra. My old man had a couple of cassettes, so the music was always there, but it wasn’t till a bit later that I caught on to what it was all about and thought “wait a minute… this is the greatest thing I’ve ever heard!”

Sounds like the same thing “my old man” exposed me too with certain music.

Oh man that is cool. My offspring have some real good tunes they’ve sent my way on the reverse. CB’s mind is still open to new stuff (as long is it good!)
Thanks for the ZZ Top nudge. I heard a song on the radio last night and it has to be a tune buy them. The search is on.

ZZ Top are one of my favourite bands. I only got into them a few years back after some chat when I was in the studio. I got into them big time. Big time. Tres Hombres is easily in my top 10. Top 5? Their last album (subject of that conversation) is brilliant, too.

Just found it first shot (Shithouse luck) and I didn’t even know the title but I do now. ‘I Gotsta Get Paid’. Killer. I dig that early stuff the best but the tune i just stumbled on might change that. What album is their last?
(Actually “Shithouse Luck” would be a good title for a ZZ Top song)

That’s the opener on their last one, La Futura. Killer record. Straight up awesomeness.

I also pre-ordered the new Billy Gibbons album. Big Bad Blues. I wasn’t all that fussed with his last one, but how can I ignore a title like that?

(Shithouse Luck is definitely a ZZ Top title if ever I read one!)

That’s great on Tonio. Big Earl (son) was over the other day and he’s a record/music guy also. I showed him the original vinyl of ‘Food Chain’. It’s black and orange vinyl. Doesn’t mean shit to me (other than it’s kinda cool). I think I’ve picked up that you’re into LP thing. I just have these because there were just cassettes, 8 Tracks and records back when i was still counting hairs on my chin. Big earl has been bitten by the retro/coolness of it all. Plus he likes the sound

Yeah, I got into records a few years ago. Started listening to stuff differently… paying closer attention and making time to get to know albums again. I love the ritual of grabbing an LP from the shelf and dropping the needle.

Iconic Calexico this one. They have only gotten better as musicians. Nobody makes music like they do. Good post!

No argument here. Hard for musicians to come up with unique music nowadays. Calexico does. Thanks for dropping a comment.
