Movie : Snap review – Far From Men

You want to watch something far from commercial filmmaking then this movie might be for you. Set in 1950’s Algeria. A school teacher in a remote part of the country is given the task of delivering a prisoner to the French authorities where he will be tried and then probably executed.

Political, religious, cultural and personal ideas are questioned in this film. It’s beautifully shot,  directed (David Oelhoffen) and cast. The two leads, Viggo Mortensen and Reda Kateb are perfect and bring truthful, subtle, heartfelt, real performances  Along with these performances there is not a false move in this documentary style film. The musical score is by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.

Slow and engaging. You will feel that you are in this harsh, hard country. Bracket some time and take the Far From Men journey. CB did and it moved him. Warning! Viggo smokes. No one has made smoking look this good since Bogie.

Great piece of film. Made for CB and the 3 other people that like this kind of filmmaking

Sounds like my kind of flick. I like Viggo. There are a bunch of art cinema houses in my region, but this one might not have made it to any of them. Anyway, it’s on my list now. Gracias, CB.

Knowing a bit of your tastes I would guess that you’d like this. The cinematography is beautiful. Always like it when they make harsh environments beautiful. Viggo has integrity oozing out of him. A lot of actors talk about doing quality projects. Viggo doesn’t talk he does. He sets the bar high for himself.

Yeah, your point about Viggo is right on the money. Did you see Captain Fantastic? He’s real good in it. It’s a fine movie.

Can’t remember but like I was saying to Neil, Viggo has a great track record and this doesn’t do anything to lessen it. It’s slow Doc but the camera picks everything up. If you pitched this idea to the suits in Hollywood they’d hit the trap door.

Unless you could somehow work The Avengers in there.

Right. The Marvel comics guys. I had them on the brain because one of their flicks was on a recent in-flight movie. I watched 15 minutes of it and got a headache.

Slow as hell but worth it in my opinion. Beautifully shot. I think I’m repeating myself.

Works for me, CB; I’m fond of slow burners.
