Album : Allman Brothers – Eat A Peach

This was my intro into the Allman Brothers music. I had a buddy that knew I dug music so he recommended I get this one “because it’s good and Duane Allman can play” (I knew about Allman from the ‘Layla’ album).  Right from the opening cut it was a different sound for CB (had a taste from Derek and the Dominos). Country twinge with some blues and some wicked slide. Good start. It wasn’t instant attraction but it had my attention. The next cut was like the band was getting tuned up at the start and then the bass kicks in and they take off into an extended jam that cooks.  This cut was kinda what the band was about for me. It grew on CB. I was listening to a lot of jazz and bands like Yes so I was liking the musicians doing this instrumental workout.  ‘Melissa’ is back to the country feel with subtle licks and vocals. I was liking it.

Side two and four was one cut ‘Mountain Jam’. Live. CB figured it out. An album with studio and live cuts (way to go CB you dumb shit)). This was the tune that did it for me. I was into jams and the Allmans go to town on this one. Good work from everyone. Bass and drums laying down the beat. Greg Allman adds some organ which CB always digs. It was akin to the Traffic I was listening to.  The guitar that my buddy was talking about comes into play on this one. He was right with both Dickie Betts and Duane Allman doing good work. This is just one long jam and I was in for the ride.

Side three starts with some more live stuff with ‘One Way Out’ which absolutely cooks. I really dug this one. It’s a Sonny Boy Williamson tune and the Brothers nail it. What a great cut. Did CB say he likes guitar, yeah I think he did. Betts and Allman trade some killer licks on this one. Greg Allman’s vocals were starting to grow on me. The band move into another blues tune with a Muddy Waters cut. These guys were putting their stamp on things. Yeah and that slide sounded real good. The double guitar thing was working for me.

The last songs on side 3 are studio cuts. You just get more of the same real good music these guys were playing. ‘Blue Sky’ is a really good song. Betts takes the vocals. It has the same great playing from the others. Duane and Dickie end the side with an acoustic cut ‘Martha’ It fits.

CB didn’t know a lot about this band, other than Duane’s work (which was starting to really hook me) with Eric Clapton. It took me a while to absorb the music. This is a big bite and it’s a jam filled experience. It certainly wasn’t mainstream and you had to go deep into the FM dial to find a lot of it. The Allman Brothers was a slower appeal for me but it just kept sounding better after every play.  It was just more good music going on my record pile. This was going to keep CB busy for a while. Lots of really good music.

I love this one. Lots of my favourite Allmans tracks on this. I love jamming too but Mountain Jam is a wee bit too much for me! The end is sublime though.

The to long thing was a problem CB didn’t have. It might have had something to do with the second had ganja I was exposed to.
Yeah I agree with your take. So much to like and that ending is “sublime”
(Have been delving into your list. Liking lots and finding some good stuff. Behemoth, Mastodon have been getting some air play at my cave. Lots to take in. Thanks again)

Actually, I’ve never heard it on vinyl so I believe it was split, or maybe edited down too? I’ve only heard the CD versions.

I don’t necessarily mind long. If it was Purple doing Mandrake Root for half an hour I can (just about) take it but Mountain Jam gets too sleepy for my liking.

Now you have me off on a Purple quest. What style? Long jams and solos were a staple back them. Some bands pulled it off and some just didn’t. Jazz guys that I dig invented it.
HMO. All the records I’ve been doing I have on vinyl. Not because I’m a big collector but I’ve kept them all these years. Listening to this it was I juggle on the turntable. I always tried to do it fast to keep the vibe going. I made a few scratchy mistakes. I loved the convenience of cds when they came out.

Mandrake Root was quite a Hendrix-y number, they used to spin it out for ages. Epic guitar and organ solos. There’s a good looong version on Live In Stockholm 1970. They used to spin out Space Truckin’ to some length too. 70s live takes of that tend to spin out to 20-30 mins.

I do love the long jams and solos of old live albums. I liked Ted Nugent spinning songs out cause he’s such a great player and The Who’s extended versions always work for me. The Allmans are great at that stuff. Live At Fillmore East is perfect!

I will hunt out a vinyl copy of Eat A Peach cause I really want to hear how it was originally presented.

You got me on my own shortening of names. I was actually thing a band called “Purple” without the Deep. Shows you how quick I am.
I love all those old Jams (listening to Mandrake Root right now). I love the Nice’s live version of She Belongs to Me. I liked it way better than Bobs version. Give it a spin if you get a chance. Emerson goes to town. The early Who live is great and I love ‘Stranglehold’
I’ll keep an eye out for a copy of Peach just because you’re a good guy.

It is a cool cover. Will add to your collection. Your nudges have led me to some longer jams lately. CB has never been afraid of a drum solo.

I’d say my fear increases from guitar > keys > bass > drum solos. Heard many good drum solos but way more boring ones sadly!

You simply can’t go wrong with this one! In fact, when I spotted your post, I spontaneously decided to listen to most of the album in one shot.

BTW, The Allman Brothers were an acquired taste/late discovery for me as well. I’m glad I came around in time to see them live once – only a few months prior to their final show at the Beacon.

If you consider the difficult circumstances at the time they made this album (Duane’s death, drug rehab for most members), it is kind of amazing that it came out the way it did.

Apparently, Duane felt “Melissa” was the best tune Gregg had ever written. Gregg, on the other hand, had felt it was too soft for the Brothers, so he wanted to save it for a solo album. The tune dates back to 1967, and if I recall it correctly, Gregg wrote it, using one of Duane’s guitars. While the Allmans may be more associated with blues rock, it’s one of my favorite tunes from this band.

Thanks for that Christian. Yeah so much more to this band. I think it’s Betts who brings that country feel. I love it. They just knew how to make great music. If they cooked anything like they played the food would be delicious. My buddy just discovered ‘Melissa’ after all these years. He’s blown away.
      What a legacy Duane left.

No I never saw them. After Duane died (probably gone by the time i got to this one) I didn’t follow them too much. The albums like this one are where i live with this band. I think you have a pretty good list of great bands and musicians that you’ve seen. The Boss very early if I recall.

Yeah, I saw him in a NYC club in 1974 and 75. I’ve been lucky to see loads of great acts over the years. A few nights ago I saw Sidi Toure and his band. They’re from Mali. A fantastic band. I’d never heard of anyone in the band before. Check them out online. Bye till next time.

I guess this is a good segue. I saw the original ABB just three months before Duane died. Who knew, right? They were just one of many bands that were out there at the time but one of the absolute best. “At Fillmore East” was – if I recall correctly – imminent to be released. My friends and I were going to go to one of those Fillmore shows, skipped it, went to Central Park gig. Imagine. I coulda been that guy yelling out “Whipping Post.” 🙂

Great choice CB. I can see both sides of the “Mountain Jam is too long” argument. I like it but I prefer their short songs (17 minutes or so.) The Dead and ABB share perhaps co-equal responsibility for jamming on this tune. Don’t know who came up with it first but they jammed it together on at least one occasion. Duane’s solo on “Blue Sky” is nothing less than exquisite. The band also played a recording of “Little Martha” at the end of every show, as a tribute to Duane. Only song he ever wrote.

As to the title, Duane once said the following – “Every time I’m in Georgia I eat a peach for peace.” Less-often quoted is that he was not talking about fruit. Over and out.

Did you have an inkling this was the album I hinted at the other day?
As far as “great Choice”, Yeah. I can still remember the recommendation. No fire works from this buddy, just a cool “you gotta hear this CB”.
You are more of a fan but I think I dig the music just as much , if that makes sense. I know I’m getting to the stage where I repeat myself (only so many thoughts in this head of mine) but they just keep sounding better. I guess it’s what we’ve talked about. Not a lot of this kind of music in the air these days. Man have you been busy with this blog thing the last couple days.
Last time I saw my buddy that told me about the record, he was as drunk as a skunk.
Like I said to Tony , you don’t want to take CB down any divergent roads with things like the last paragraph.

No clue what you were gonna go with. Yeah, I’m only “more of a fan” in the sense that I followed them for a longer period and know more about them. But I don’t think anyone can say that they enjoy someone’s music more than another person enjoys it. The point is, it’s all good and we dig it. BTW, when I first was asked if I wanted to see ABB, it was so long ago I didn’t have the slightest idea who they were. Almost nobody did. I was just going for social reasons.

Yeah, I’ve been heavy on the blog lately but really my only hobby is music – blogging, guitar, going to shows, listening to music.

As to that last paragraph, true story. I’ll let your imagination fill in the blanks.

This was my intro to the Allmans too, CB, specifically “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More.” Later, in college, I posted the “Eat a Peach” insert on my dorm room door, and the jagoff next door put up a paper bag with “Apples” written on it (my roommate and I never did hit it off with them).
