Album : Led Zeppelin – lll

CB didn’t get into this album for a while (He was expanding his musical direction down other roads).  Zeppelin’s first two records were still getting lots of spin time. I had heard a few cuts and finally got around to the record.  ‘Immigrant Song’ opens the album and was one of the tunes I had heard. Different from what I was used to but still dug it. Aggressive beat. ‘Friends’ is acoustic and I was liking it.  A little haunting.  Heavy acoustic. A new style. Plant’s vocals are a little different. The next cut ‘Celebration Day rocks out. Like Page’s work on this one. Good groove. Back to the blues kick on ‘Since I’ve Been Loving You’. Everyone contributes on this one. Reminder of what their music did to me when I first heard them.  Could listen to this groove all night. Great tune. Last cut starts out with a Yardbirds sound. It rocks. I was digging this song and this album.

‘Gallows Pole’ opens up side two and sounds like a western. Again a change of pace but it builds into a very cool tune. The next two cuts are a little softer, more acoustic. Page does some nice work on both. A little Zeppelin stomp on ‘Brony-Y-Aur Stomp’. It’s all acoustic but does it move. The boys cook on this one, again Page goes to town. A little country/blues. What were these guys listening too? Loved this tune. The last tune is bare bones blues with some killer slide. Very cool sound.

This album should have been called new directions . I liked it the more I listened to it. Still had the early sound from the first two albums. It would have been ok with CB if they would have stuck with that vibe but I really liked where they were taking the music. Bringing in some acoustic/traditional ideas.  Some new styles for me to dive into.

My favourite of the first four. I think Houses and Grafitti are their peak for me.

I just like that they were having different musical ideas. I know you’ve mentioned you have cooled on them a bit. Same thing happened to me but somewhere the music sparked again and I’m digging it.

I gave LZ1 a spin a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed it a lot more than usual. So may be that I’m getting the spark back too.

I don’t know what it is but sometimes for me when I hear too much away from the music shit (personal or gossip) or over analyzing, over exposure I need a break and then it’s getting back to actually listening to the music and letting it take me. I have a few people on that list right now.

Interesting choice. When this album came out, people wondered what Zep was up to. Not as pedal-to-the-metal as their other stuff and like you said, more acoustic stuff. But they always did that. They loved Joan Baez and especially Joni Mitchell. But this stuff rocks in a different way. It took a while for the fan and even other bands to catch on. But Heart does a killer ‘Immigrant Song.’ And nobody says ‘hammer of the gods’ like Jack Black.

‘Bron-yr-aur-Stomp’ is a killer tune for me. I never got into Heart but I do like there nods to bands like Zep and Yes. Like I was saying to HMO i gave the band a break for a few years but am back listening to them regular. This album has some real good turns.

Tangerine, Gallow’s Pole, Immigrant Song. It’s my third or fourth favourite Zep album and it’s darn good.

Yes I enjoyed your take on them. I guess at one time I started taking them for granted. Not anymore.

I barely heard them before buying their albums, so it was all new and exciting. Still haven’t really burnt out on them.

“Tangerine” and “That’s The Way” are the highlights to me on this album. While it’s pretty decent, I prefer I and II. The real leap to me is IV. With “Black Dog”, “Rock & Roll”, “The Battle Of Evermore”, “Misty Mountain Hop”, “When The Levee Break” and, of course, “Stairway,” I think you can’t beat that.

I really like this one. Perhaps my second favourite of theirs… I like the vibes just as much as the songs, y’know?

I’m very fond of this album too, CB. In fact it is the only Zepp I’ve really written about in detail. They did the folk injections really well I reckon, and what a lovely contrast with the bombast. Might have to throw this into the car player tomorrow!

I remember that take VC (a great one it was). I am “fond” of this one. I’ll take the music for a walk. If you see me on your drive give me a honk.
(Listening to one of your suggestions. Gentle Giant ‘Free Hand’. Enjoying it a lot. The singer sounds a little like Richard Thompson to me )

Maybe my favorite Zeppelin album, although “Zoso” comes close.

All the albums have some kind of hook. I like this one for a lot of reasons. Like i commented with someone else, I still reach for the first album the most.

I love their first four, all a bit different, but the folk elements on number 3 really appeal to me.

Me too. Cool to see the different music that influenced these groups. Obviously the blues was huge. Traffic had the folk and jazz, Cream, Mac, Beck had a lot of jazz. Your Small faces had folk sprinkled in there also. Maybe the Ronnie Lane voice.

Some creative ideas went into this one. Good direction for the band to take. Seems like the folks chiming in all like this one.

“Gallows Pole” is another good Zeppelin track. There is no other band who sounded like them back in the day. It would almost be impossible to recreate these songs.
