Movie : Snap Review – Temple Grandin

download (6)

A young woman (Temple) is sent to the country to live with her aunt and uncle who own a ranch. Observing the way cattle behave she sees a different way to handle them and learns something about herself.  She goes off to college and because she has autism she is treated like an outcast and an odd ball especially after she invents “The Squeeze Machine”. Temple takes her knowledge and outside the box thinking into the cattle industry where her methods are up against a rough male environment with no time for this weird wacked out woman.

CB was steered to this film by a catchgrooves review (see review below). I just about turned it off after the first 10 minutes but hung in a while longer and was glad I did. At first Claire Danes performance as Grandin rubbed me the wrong way.  I came to dig her work and fall in love with the character of Temple. Great off the radar film. You end up pulling for Temple and being inspired by her life.  This is a really different movie but a really good one. CB was drawn into this one and pleasantly surprised. I like outside the norm things.

Whoa! Good call, CB. We saw this when it aired on HBO. (My wife works with autistic kids so we were clued in.) Loved it! It just works all the way. I had zero opinion of Claire Danes prior to this, came away afterwards thinking she was a terrific actress. Which reminds me, I missed the entire last season of Homeland. Gotta queue up the DVR.

I didn’t even know who Danes was. These kinds of portrayals usually fall short for me. I find them not realistic. Claire was bang on. Scary good. I loved her. Give your wife a hug for me. Great work she’s doing. Keeps it real for CB. Never seen ‘Homeland’

‘Homeland’ has fallen off in popularity if not quality recently. But I’ve dug it all the way through. It’s an international spy thing which is a genre I’ve always loved.

I love the “Spy” game thing too. I just don’t watch a lot of TV. I have a buddy who’s hooked on Ray Donovan. Voight is killing him as Mickey.

My buddy was telling me about a scene where Mickey gets a ride from Vegas from some old doll because he’s broke. She pulls over and gets old Mick to earn his ride. I was in stitches.

Claire Danes is a fantastic actor. Ever see Shopgirl? — it’s a good one. Steve Martin also is in it.

My wife tells me that CD is great in Homeland. Stupidly, I don’t watch that show.

No I have only seen her work in this. I wasn’t aware of her.
Like you I haven’t seen ‘Homeland’. Another One of these great portrayals of someone seeing things different is Sophia Helin in the Bridge (Swedish/Danish). Same thing for me, I was going to turn it off after 10 minutes but hung on for two seasons (CB doesn’t watch TV). Saga Noren is one of my all time favorite characters. My gal likes her also. Series plays like a feature film.

Yeah J. It is worth a watch I think. The director does a good job. Plus you are pulling for Temple all the way. Different style of film for CB buy well done.

I like this movie, but there were times that the acting felt forced, or awkward. Even still, I would recommend it. I was also rooting for Temple. It’s certainly a good movie to watch for better understanding the autism spectrum.

I hear you on that. I just about turned it off because of that (I’ve watched other films that I couldn’t stick with on those kinds of portrayals). Claire brought me in and I got caught up in the story. I thought they caught some real truthful stuff. plus I always like an underdog story. If CB catches a little “understanding” on the side, that’s a good thing. Thanks for stopping by Juli. I’ll swing by your place. I usually stick with film/music but always willing to stretch my boundaries. Later. CB
