Speaks his mind on music & movies!
This was the second Tim Buckley album that CB acquired. After ‘Greetings From L.A.’ I was wanting more TB. ‘Dolphins’ (Fred Neil song. He wrote Everybody’s Talking) opens the record. It’s toned down from the previous record but I was getting that distinctive voice. ‘Honey Man’ gets back in the groove that I was familiar with. Sexy, bluesy with some nice guitar and Buckley’s passionate, sensual vocals. ‘Because of You’ is a mixed bag of jazzy, blues with some strings thrown in. Love this tune. TB is feeling the lyrics on this one. His singing just grabbed me. ‘Peanut Man’ has a little Harry Nilsson’s vibe. Various vocalists on this with a nice sax break. Funky tune. ‘Martha’ ends side one. It’s a phone call to an ex lover and a change of pace. Love Tim’s take on this Tom Waits (a new song writer to CB) tune. This song appealed to CB’s romantic side. I like this one. Buckley sings with so much feeling.
Side two opens up with ‘Quicksand and it’s back in that groove that I dug. I love this shit. I could listen to a whole side of Buckley doing this. He has his own way of expressing his desires. He does a duet on the next cut. Buckley probably could have played it safe and gone this route and made a few bucks. I like the tune but glad he stayed with the edge. ‘Stone In Love’ has him back in his funk saddle. Like this one a lot. The title cut is Buckley exploring more of his musical ideas. I really liked it when he does this. I wasn’t hearing anything like it in what I was listening to. He always sings with so much feeling and passion. Lives the songs. ‘Sally’ ends the record on a good note with Tim going downtown for a good time.
This album solidified my craving for more of Tim Buckley’s music. Lots here to like. A few changes and a mix of styles which worked for me. I always like musicians exploring different ideas. There was still lots of the groove that grabbed me from the first album I heard. TB was a great piece to CB’s collection and i wasn’t going to stop here. There was lots more of his music out there. This music appealed to me. Simple as that.
