Movie : Snap Review – ’71

download (13)

CB is taking a break from his movie scene takes for a while and featuring newer films that have made an impression on him. In other words films he really likes just to show he isn’t stuck in the 70’s.

First film up is ’71. A young British soldier fresh out of  training is sent to the shitstorm that is Belfast in 1971. During his first action, a small riot, he is separated from his unit and spends the next 24 hours in a living hell.

Great top notch film making. Director Yann Demange hits a grand slam. Fantastic film from top to bottom. You like it real, gritty, well paced, emotional, harsh with no holds barred? This will be for you.

They’re still making good ones and this is proof.

Yes you do if it grabs you in the least. Go for a ride into hell, if that appeals to you. Great filmmaking J.

Sometimes you just can’t beat a ride into hell, eh?

I’ll have a comedy ready to follow it up…

        I like being miserable.

A friend I trust says ‘The Death Of Stalin’ is a good laugh.

        Haha. Miserable is good.

I’ve heard good things about The Death Of Stalin, but I’ve yet to check it out. Buscemi and Paddy C. When on form, both those guys are great to watch.

I know you are more of a film guy than you admit too. None of that hollywood nonsense in this one. Gritty like CB likes them. Just the attention to the era with the whole production.

Oh I’m big film guy and I totally admit to it. So’s my guitar buddy Bill. We’ve seen shitloads of movies together and individually and talk about them all the time. We love a good flick and find nothing more amusing than to quote “Glengarry” or “Raging Bull,’ totally out of context. I toyed with blogging about them and don’t only because I don’t have enough time with the music thing.

Have you seen ‘A Quiet Place?’ I think you’d appreciate the use of silence in the film. Kinda scary, too.

You may need to put your arm around your gal for this one. Or maybe the reverse. I’d love to hear your reaction as viewer and then your (I’m told) director’s eye.

You got my interest with the “use of silence”. I think people forget the “motion picture” part of the deal. The notes they don’t play like in music. On the other hand good dialogue (Mamet etc) works in the right hands.

Yeah, I’m a big chicken shit at heart. So I’ll be watching with my eyes half closed.
