Movie Scene : The Missouri Breaks – Smoked Meat

Regulator Lee Clayton is finishing up business.  Getting rid of the last of a bunch of horse thieves.  He burns down their cabin and runs his crazy mouth off before he takes out the last of the gang. “Smoked meat” Brutal and violent and scary nuts.

This scene brings together two of Babyhead’s favorite actors, Marlon Brando and Harry Dean Stanton. It takes two to tango and Stanton’s stoic performance is the foil to Brando’s psychopath.  It’s funny how scenes stay with you and this one has. Brando tags it at the end with a line that is forever in CB’s head “Well, old granny’s gettin tired now”.  One of CB’s favorite Marlon performances. Stone cold nuts. No over play just committed to the truth.

    Not seen this. The only Brando western I’ve seen is One Eyed Jacks. Any others he has been in?

      This ones a little outside the box but I really like it. Brando’s performance works for me. I think I’ll rewatch it now. ‘Appaloosa’ is another good one he did. Hows it going over on your station? I better pop over.

        Just ticking along over at HMO!

        I once saw the end of a Brando western on telly and wasn’t sure what it was. I just looked up Appaloosa and that’s it! I really enjoyed what I saw of it so I’ll definitely check it out too.

        Another good one. Hey it’s a duster and has Marlon on a horse. No brainer. HMO should drop a guest review over here on a flick that moved you. Can even be a short snapper if you like. “I saw this really good movie. You should watch it” Something like that.

        Any movie would do. That would be great! Maybe a new film for CB to watch and also a new take so people wouldn’t have to read my bullshit. 1537 has mentioned that he is going to throw something he liked my way.
        I don’t want to squeeze you on the list but I’m looking forward to that.

    Screenplay by one of my favorite authors, Thomas McGuane. I don’t think he took to Hollywood too well …

    I’ll have to dig this one up — it’s been decades since I’ve seen it!

      ‘Nobody’s Angel’ is the only one of his books I’ve read. Any other recommendations. He also did the screenplay for ‘Tom Horn’. I really liked the story. The film got it right with some of it. Not “taking to Hollywood “is understandable.
      I love ‘Breaks’. I’ll have to pop over and see some more of your new takes. A film/music guy like yourself should have lots of good stuff under his belt.

    Aw man, this is another that I really should have seen (that’s a run of movies now!). Stanton is probably my favourite actor ever. He instantly improves anything he’s in. A real scene stealer.

      I’ll do a take on the whole film when I get to it. Lots of great scenes (kinda adds up to a good movie). Yeah Harry is a CB fave also. ‘Paris Texas’ is a good Harry Dean flick. I should do a take on CB’s hall of fame character actors. You could chime in. I’ve been putting out some half assed invites for a few guest film takes. I’m sure J has some up his sleeve.

        I get you on the “motivation” and inspiration thing. I have to strike while the irons hot on that stuff. I probably have a little more time on my hands than you so that helps. Always enjoy your input.

    The teaming of legends Brando and Jack Nicholson here always intrigued me, but I’ve never seen this movie. My go-to critic, Leonard Maltin, gives “Missouri Breaks” a BOMB rating, calling it “one of the worst ‘big’ movies ever made.” Not that I always agree with Maltin, but going from BOMB to, say, 3 out of 4 stars is quite a stretch, CB!

      Not only did I dig this scene, there was lots for CB to like in the film. I will probably get to a few more of them in time. It certainly isn’t a traditional western, uneven. I guess Leonard and CB are not on the same page. It was one of the last films that I liked Brando in. I’d be interested in Pete’s take on it one day.

    Rest in peace, both of em. I always thought Brando was a little (to quote Kramer) PVrrrt! A little out there. And Harry, he was great in everything he did.

      Marlon is a “big” out there on this one “Old Granny’s tired”. My favorite line in the film. I started to tail off on his work after this. He has some outstanding performances earlier in his career. Subtle and restraint were his middle names. Harry Dean is a treasure. You seen ‘Paris Texas’ ?

        I’ve seen clips, but not the entire movie. I had a french prof in uni go on about Wim Wenders, and she played us some clips. Random, I know.

        Worth a watch for a lot of reasons in CB’s opinion, but what the hell do I know. I love Harry Dean in ‘Repo Man’ also. Hey, like you said, all his work. Good dialogue. Look forward to some more music/film takes from you.
