Album – Van Morrison : Tupelo Honey

download (3)

CB couldn’t have got a better opening than ‘Wild Night’.  I wanted to be in this song Van was singing and do the “Boogie Woogie”. It had a lot of the same vibe as the Springsteen I was listening too.  The first two songs on the album weren’t doing anything to lessen Morrison’s grip on CB.  Great images combined with perfect music. He gets in a jazzy/blues groove with ‘Woman’.  Love it. Van’s style.

Side two opens with the title song and it grabbed me right away. Love Morrison’s vocals and commitment on this one.  He’s pulling it from somewhere. Background singers always get CB and they are great on this one, answering Van’s “she’s an angel” the sax seals it.  some nice guitar licks.  Beautiful tune.  How much good music was in this Van guy?  How does he follow that song up? With more solid tunes. It feels like he’s in a good space with the music.  A feel good record.

I was wanting more Van Morrison music and I got my fix with this solid album.  This was definitely a CB type record. No filler just some knock out songs.  I was just starting to open the big door into Morrison’s music. I was scratching the surface and I was anticipating what was next in my choices.  I was in for the long run.

I kind of hate ‘I Wanna Roo You’ (sorry). But the title track is my favourite Van song,

I’m not much of a fan of the man, Van, but I do like the title track a whole lot.

I do love Astral Weeks – ‘Sweet Thing’ is a thing of rare beauty and truth.

I seen Van and John Lee Hooker on a double bill. The woman beside me thought Hooker was Van and she was scared shitless of John. Hanging onto her boyfriend everytime Hooker growled and took a swig of wine.

I’m not kidding you this woman was petrified. She actually thought he was going to come off the stage and do her bodily harm. Funny, Hooker never rubbed me that way. Look forward to the take on the JLK album.

Van has put a lot of great stuff out into the world. Real good album here but I was always more partial to ‘Moondance.’ That’s a song my kid heard on the radio and liked when she was young. She picked up a little more classic rock than my son who has resiliently stayed in his Green Day/Nirvana groove.

I started with ‘Moondance’ and just kept going. I think you did a good job of exposing the youngins to some good music. That’s our job Doc.

Yeah, expose rather than shove down their throats. I’ve seen people who tried to foist their Beatles or Stones love on their kids. Sometimes works, more often they rebel. That’s *their* job.

Unfortunately, I don’t know the album, and it doesn’t appear to be available in Apple Music/iTunes, but I totally dig “Wild Night”! I also just found the title track on a sampler and like it a lot as well! Only based on these two songs, this looks like a great record!

In the 90’s, John Mellencamp recorded a great cover of “Wild Night.” It’s actually one of my favorite Mellencamp tunes from that time.

I’ll lend you the album, cassette, 8 Track or cd. This was the stuff that I heard early on that made a life long fan of CB. You are discovering some gems.
Yeah Mellencamp did a good job. I like the woman singer on that one.

This one’s pretty great, eh? I only got to know it a couple of years ago after a conversation with a good pal following a conversation with the same pal about Danny & The Champions of the World (you heard them? You should…). Astral Weeks is still my favourite, right enough… just cause I’ve known it longer.

I have another new band to check out. ‘Danny and The Champs’ along with ‘Willard’. Thanks for that. I’ll have a listen and let you know. Funny with Van it’s hard for me to pick one i listen to more. ‘Astral’ would be right up there. (A take is coming). I heard it after ‘Honey’ and ‘Moondance’

I’ll look forward to your take. Moondance is the other Van album I have (yes, I only have Astral, Honey, and Moondance) and I like it a helluva lot also.

I’m not too familiar with many of Van’s post-70s albums. But I have a lot of his stuff from the 70s, and this is my favorite one. Great album. I like it even more than Moondance.

    Till next time —

Great album. I am a big Van fan. My favorite is Beautiful Vision from 1982. I saw him live about that time and it is one of my top-5 concerts of all time. Tupelo Honey is some pretty sweet stuff.

‘Vision’ is a good one. I should be getting to it in a couple of years. I seen him in 86 with John Lee Hooker. Good show. Top 5 for you. That’s pretty good.

Never got to see JLH. He is a classic. Few years later after you saw him he had kind of a hit with The Healer album.

Yup. I was just telling the story of that concert. The guy sitting beside, his girl friend thought JLH was Van and was petrified that he was going to come into the audience and do bad things to her. Hooker was growling and drinking wine and was right into the music. Memorable night.

(Listening to ‘Buzzin Fly’ by Tim Buckley right now. Beautiful)

Sure! Have all the albums up to 1980, and a further dozen or so after that. It’s really the later ones that give me the pip, all the moaning and complaining. But some of the early stuff is sublime!

Yeah the hook was set with the early ones. Like I said with this one, he seems in a happy place. Did I really say that?
