Single Buena – Morphine

download (2)

How’s this for one cool tune.  The bass riff catches you , the drums keep the beat, cool vocals then CB’s in sax heaven.  What a great sound!  I was hooked right off the bat.  Talking about wanting more (lots more from this album). What a groove.

Lots of coolness in this one, bluesy, jazzy and rock.  Great combo and it works.  Little sleazy, greasy and sexy.  Man does this set a mood.  The sax sounds like a whole orchestra.  Always love the bass playing lead.

Coming from all the different styles and music I heard, Morphine sounded fresh and new to me.  I dug it big time and still do.  Stripped down and raw.  Oh yeah,  Jerome Deupree drums, Dana Colley sax, Mark Sandman vocals, bass  make some very cool music.

Man does that sax sound “Good, Good, Gooood!”

One of my absolute fave bands from the 90’s. I love every single note they ever put out. You’re dang right about the bass on this one.

I still go on a ‘Morphine’ jag regularly. Yeah, that bass just grabs me. Anybody new doing this kind of stuff today?

The absolute coolest, CB. I got into these guys about 10 years ago and I fell pretty hard for Cure For Pain (it’s still on heavy rotation here). The whole hazy jazz blues thing they have going on is perfect.

I’d never heard this song before.
It’s terrific. Perfect rock and roll.

    Great choice, CB.

Yeah Neil it’s really good stuff. If you dig into these guys I think you will like what you find. Mark Sandman passed away, way to early but the other two are still doing cool stuff. I think they hang out in Boston and play the East Coast. Chance they might stop by in your neighborhood. I really dig their stuff.

Cool tune. Yeah, they were a Boston band for sure. They used to play regularly at a terrific Cambridge club called the Middle East. Never saw ’em. The square right outside the club is officially named Mark Sandman Square. My son’s bands have played at the club a fair amount. A local institution.

Yeah, I’m a big fan of their music. I think we talked about them before. Sandman was in another (I think it was a Boston band) band Treat Her Right. Sonny boy is gigging all over. Only way to learn. Play live. Cool. Love all those old clubs.
Doc I just watched a very good doc on the Pittsburgh Jazz scene. I think you would really dig it. ‘We Knew What We Had ; The Greatest Jazz Story Ever Told’. Man did I learn a lot.

Yeah, Treat Her Right had some nice, bluesy stuff. I didn’t know Pittsburgh had a jazz scene, at least not a prominent one. I’ll check that out. Thanks.

I have a couple Treat her Right CD’s . I like them. Yeah the Pittsburgh thing will blow your mind. Not only all the prominent musicians that came from there but the standard they all have.

That’s a cool tune. I’m totally with you here on the bass and the sax. I never heard of that band before. I’ve cited it before and I’ll cite it again: “The farther one travels/The less one knows/The less one really knows”

That right there? That’s your song right there. You should write that. I will continue it. “One should travel a mile in another man’s shoes/As he is then a mile away/And you have his shoes.”

I’m liking that too. But what kind of groove are you laying down behind it? “But you don’t have to pay his dues or take care of the girl friend blues”

I’ve listened to some of Morphine’s other songs from their first two albums. Their lineup with just bass, drums and saxophone is intriguing and creates a unique sound. I’m not aware of any other band like them.

Now that you heard them they are going to turn up everywhere for you now. They are really good. Other some jazz combos I can’t think of that sound coming from anywhere else.

Amazing huh. I think of all the good tunes out there still waiting for CB to discover. This is a really good tune from a really good band. Cool that you dig it. It’s off an album called ‘Cure For Pain’. Solid record.
