Movie : Monte Walsh

Times are changing and Monte Walsh is bucking the trend.  He doesn’t know anything but cowboying and can’t imagine doing anything else.  A lot of his peers feel the same way but are being forced into changing just because there is not enough ranch work anymore.  This set of cowboys are down to the last bit of work, working for a cattle manager.  Monte’s best friend Chet sees it coming and makes the change.  Monte starts to waver and confides in his prostitute girlfriend that maybe he should try something new.  Things play out influencing Monte’s choice.  Change is hard for someone who has only known one thing his whole life.

CB got caught up in this story.  It’s told with a sense of humor with some dark moments on the side.  It’s a simple story told in an easy manner. William A. Fraker does a good job taking us into the mindset of the characters.  Just how hard it is to handle so much change coming so fast.  He also has David M. Walsh capture it all beautifully on camera.  The supporting cast are authentic looking and fit the roles.  One particular scene had CB laughing out loud for a while.  The cook at the ranch is a dirty stinky old shit but “he sure can cook”.  Just the way the boys react to the stinky old bastard is worth watching the movie.  They finally grab him and give em a bath.

The three leads Lee Marvin, Jack Palance and Jean Moreau work well together.  Jack and Lee are believable as life long buddies.  Both give good performances.  Marvin hams it up a bit but that’s ok. I like the guy.  CB is a big Marvin and Palance fan.

So if you’re looking for a quiet little slice of film that doesn’t take itself too seriously check out Monte Walsh.  It is light with some serious turns and has a good look at the old west moving into the future.

And like the movie says “Nobody gets to be a cowboy forever”.

Got to admit that I never saw this one. But I should have, because I’m a big fan of Lee Marvin.

He was real funny in Cat Ballou. Remember the scene where someone is laid out in a casket? Candles have been lit around the casket. Marvin’s character, a drunk, staggers in and starts singing Hsppy Burthday to the guy in the casket and blows out the candles.

Kid Shelleen is CB’s hero. I remember that bit. (There’s a similar one in Missouri Breaks with Brando, just a not as comedic)
Neil, check out Mike Mills and Peter Buck singing Cat Balou, it’s very cool. Monte Walsh is a good one to strap into, it has it’s flaws but lots to like. All that not wanting to change with the times and are the times worth changing for. CB over and out.

You got me on this one. I have never heard of it but I did Lee Marvin. CB seems to have a fondness for Westerns. Rumor has it he’s somehow connected to film people. Maybe he should get a good old-fashioned Western made like they used to make ’em.

Yup, CB does like a good duster. I know you’re a big Lee Marvin guy. The only problem with making a western nowadays, there are no Slim Pickens, Dub Taylors, Strother Martins, Elisha Cooks, Harry Dean Stantons …George Gobells … George Gobel?

Question – if someone approached film buff CB and said We want to make an old-fashioned Western and we want you to help us cast it, who would he pick out of the current crop of actors? Assume you don’t know much about the Western but that it falls in, say, the John Ford/Howard Hawks type of film.

Great list. Tommy Lee’s got to play the hero or maybe the antihero. I play the sly grandpa-like old geezer that’s always getting in everybody’s way and is always half-drunk. He comes across as kinda stupid but reveals himself to still have a few brain cells when the hero needs him.

I’m laughing my head off and loving it. Sort of a Walter Brennan, Jack Elam type. I’m still laughing.. Speaking of Tommy Lee, did you ever see The Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada. A great Tommy Lee pic. Maybe 10 years old. Levon Helm has one of those old guy parts.

Looks familiar, but I’ve never seen this one. Again, maybe one that’s been on the telly when I was wee… just not one I particularly remember. Duly added to the list of movies to seek out!
