Shane rides into town for his inevitable show down with Ryker and Wilson. The whole story has built up to this. Soon as Shane enters the bar you start to feel the tension big time. Wilson and Shane clock each other. Someone is going to die. Shane carries on to the bar and engages with Ryker. “You’ve lived too long”. Wilson gets up and the dog at the bar slinks out. Goosebumps, the game is on.
Like any great movie scene this one pulls you right in. You are there witnessing the action. The whole ride into town, the ominous sky, the lone rider going to face his destiny. Minimal dialogue, perfect casting, great direction and you get one of CB’s all time favorite film scenes. George Stevens sets the perfect stage and the actors do the rest. Palance and Ladd go down in film history. Victor Young’s music doesn’t hurt. It’s quick and it’s violent.
“I’ve heard that you’re a low down Yankee liar”
“Prove it”
Incredible, huh? It’s been so long since I’ve seen this. Putting me right in the mood for a wee western.

It does put you in the mood for a “wee western”. Jack Palance gets his.

“Shane” is considered a Western classic, but I think it’s lost a lot of its impact. Ladd just does not convince me, and I prefer the more grown-up Brandon deWilde (as in “Hud”). But I’ll have to see it again. Stevens is a great director. Palance is a non-psycho version of Andy Robinson, one of THE great ugly villains. And the Grand Teton scenery is a huge plus.

Stevens absolutely sets the mood for this scene. One of my favorites. As for the film, it was one of the first movies I watched so I’m pretty forgiving. Watching it today it still holds up for me. So many good moments and the location is beautiful. Ladd has something going on under the skin that works for me. It comes out in this last scene. He’s a mean little bastard. Palance is just stone cold good and the third leg of the stool, Meyer as Ryker is an asshole. I think I’ll go watch it again.

Hi CB… this is somewhat unrelated, but there’s a blog that I recently started following whose author is also a film producer/director (like you). Coincidentally, he lives in my town. Anyway, he has a new indie film coming out. He’s real religious, so the theme and style may not be for you (or me), but wanted to let you know anyway, in case you want to connect with him. Here’s the link: https://mitchteemley.com/2018/01/16/a-filmmakers-journal-21/.
Ciao!

I think Mitch has popped in here and I’ve seen him on your takes I think. My hat is off to him. A big chunk to bite off. Is he just starting to film or is he done? I’ll go check it out. I’m pretty open minded on these things. I have been pleasantly surprised before.. Thanks Pete.

He’s done with the film, and I think the premier is approaching. I’ll probably check it out, it’s good to keep an opened mind. The film is about the meaning of “forgiveness” (sort of, I think). Over the Rhine is a formerly gritty part of Cincinnati that’s now becoming gentrified. The setting brings to mind “Down Here.”

Please keep me posted. I’d like to get your feel. The downtown East side of Vancouver where we filmed DH has slid even further down the scale. I just watched a PBS program on the opioid problem in your country. Heartbreaking. Thanks and stay in touch. Is there a trailer for the film?

Will keep you posted. Heroin is a very real problem here. It spread from the urban underground a long time ago. I personally know two people, plus three other relations of friends, who’ve died from it. All from good, middle-class families.

That’s close to home Pete. It really does touch us all. It’s not just a street thing and hasn’t been for years. CB tries to keep it on the music/film thing but this really gets me going. With all the bullshit that is fed to us and the head in the sand, ignorant attitude out there, this is really nasty and needs attention big time. My heart goes out to anyone who is dealing with this issue.
Off the soap box. You think Shane was dealing with a habit?

Well, don’t think they had H back in Shane’s day! Alan Ladd had some different issues, if I recall.
