Movie Scene : Shane – You’ve Lived Too Long

Shane rides into town for his inevitable show down with Ryker and Wilson.  The whole story has built up to this. Soon as Shane enters the bar you start to feel the tension big time.  Wilson and Shane clock each other.  Someone is going to die. Shane carries on to the bar and engages with Ryker.  “You’ve lived too long”.  Wilson gets up and the dog at the bar slinks out.  Goosebumps, the game is on.

Like any great movie scene this one pulls you right in.  You are there witnessing the action.  The whole ride into town, the ominous sky, the lone rider going to face his destiny. Minimal dialogue, perfect casting, great direction and you get one of CB’s all time favorite film scenes.  George Stevens sets the perfect stage and the actors do the rest.  Palance and Ladd go down in film history.  Victor Young’s music doesn’t hurt.  It’s quick and it’s violent.
