You never heard of NRBQ? Don’t worry about it not to many people have. The only thing is, they are probably one of the best bands in the history of rock n roll (In CB’s world anyway). Is CB over stating? No!
Have a listen to the live cut below and see what you think. It’s a killer, with Terry Adams doing a cross between the Killer and Monk on the keys. Big Al Anderson laying down some nasty licks on the guitar (I didn’t want him to stop), Joey Spampinato vocals and bass and Tom Ardilino providing the drums. That’s pretty much all you need to know. Press play and go for a “Rocket “ride.
We all have regrets in our lives. Babyhead got drunk and missed this band and he has been forever kicking himself in the ass. Oh yeah, any band that records a record with a professional wrestler is all right in my books. Have a listen to a rockin tune by one great band
Check this NRBQ story out https://urbanfishingpolecigars.com/2017/05/24/its-n-r-b-q-baby/
(This is a cover of the Jimmy Lloyd original which isn’t to shabby either)
(NRBQ add their talents to the ‘Stay Awake’ album featured for Vinyl Connections “Various Artists festival”. Check it out)
CB will hate me but I not only heard of these guys I saw them. They opened for George Thorogood and the Destroyers in what I can only deem a quite memorable show. Yeah, they were terrific. But I confess I was more of a Thorogood guy. Thanks for the memory.

I had a feeling you’d have heard NRBQ. Same zip code. Seen them also, even as a support. Very cool. Yeah I seen George. Small venue and he was smoking!

Oh, I thought you said you hadn’t seen them.

I was just referring that not only did you know of them but you had seen them also. CB speak. I think seeing them as the main act in a small club would have been awesome. I have a few Big Al solo records. I like his style. You know Joey Spampinato was in the band Keith Richards put together for Chuck Berry on “Hail Hail’.

That’s pretty cool. I know that Al Anderson decided to ride the country train.

You know your stuff Doc. I think Al has a little of that country hillbilly sound in his veins. Sort of the Levon Helm School.

Quite right! Of course they also hooked up with Jukebox favourite Skeeter Davis,
Thom.

I have it on cassette. Also another Jukebox favorite. Carl Perkins. Isn’t this music thang cool?

Hi CB.
Joey Spampinato moved to Cape Cod some years ago. So did his brother Johnny, who replaced Big Al in NRBQ.
Both Joey and Johnny left NRBQ years ago.
Anyway, they formed the Spampinato Brothers Band. My wife and I have seen them a few times on Cape Cod, because we take vacations there. Great band.
Sadly, Joey has had very bad health issues. He wasn’t playing with the band the last two times I saw the band.

Great stuff Neil. I’ll check around for some of the “Brothers” recordings if they have any. I know about your vacations but to be able to catch music like that. You’re making me very envious. I know Tommy passed away. Hey part of the deal. I had a feeling that a hip East coast guy would be on top of NRBQ.

Cecil Taylor meets Jerry Lee Lewis! I have the “Yankee Stadium” album, which is pretty good, although I confess this band has always been under the radar for me. Another one is Flamin’ Groovies, which are similar to NRBQ, I think.

Cecil Taylor is right. NRBQ albums are a little uneven. All over the place (which I like). I know the ‘Groovies’ work but under the radar for me also. I think a lot of it leaned towards Beatles type pop. Who knows CB could just be out to lunch. I’ll have to pop over and see what you’re up to.

I have a Flamin’ Groovies album (Teenage Head) somewhere on vinyl. I was gonna give it a spin, maybe feature it one day. Don’t know if it’s as hot as I remember it.

Doc you would know if they had the Beatles sound.

I think the Groovies were closer to a Stones sound. Rawer

Yeah I think your right. I just listened to them lately. Fox did a piece on them.

I wrote a blog entry awhile back about the boys of NRBQ. Having an indirect relationship with them , NRBQ has always been on my radar. Check out the story I wrote.

Very cool. Whats the date on the take?
Sometimes I’m a little challenged on finding things at the different stations.

I heard an NRBQ song on the radio today for the first time in years. It wasn’t, however, a really strong song. It’s called “It’s a Wild Weekend” and it’s not what I would play for a newcomer.

Amazing you would even hear A NRBQ tune. Sort of like hearing ‘Centerfold’ by Geils. I see you’re doing the Allman thing. Over to mouth off later. Listening to ‘B.L.U.E Nights’, Bill Bruford, Tony Levin, David Torn, Chris Botti. Diggin it!

Botti, huh? I always pegged him for a mainstream guy. Watch out. The Allmans thing might just blow CB’s mind.

Never heard of him. This music is far from mainstream. CB is always up to having his mind blown.

Yeah. Botti’s pretty well-known, probably more so to the general public than those other guys. Sounds like he started out jazzier and pulled back to the mainstream. I’ll definitely give that album a spin.

That’s funny because one of the cuts had ‘Miles’ all over it.

Yeah, Miles was his inspiration. Botti’s one of those rare birds that can do straight-up jazz and ‘smooth’ jazz and be respected on both sides. Check out his Wikipedia sometime when you’re bored. BTW, listening to the album now. Digging it. Thanks for the tip.
