After being introduced to Pink Floyd with the ‘Meddle’ album and sneak playing their other albums (Umma Gumma, Atom Heart Mother) from my brother’s record pile, CB ventured into this one which sent him further in his search of Floyd’s music.
From the opening cut CB was into it. ‘Arnold Layne’ and ‘Interstellar Overdrive’ were a good one two punch. ‘Interstellar’ was a trip and CB went with it. It closes with the same riff it opened with. I dig this tune. ‘Emily’ is another tune written by this Barret guy. I’d seen his name on a few song credits but no idea who he was. CB had seen ‘Live at Pompeii’ and it was a four man band no sign of this guy. I was liking his contribution. ‘Remember a Day’ and Paint Box’ end side one. Good Floyd tunes.
‘Julia Dream’ opens side two with a softer sound with some spacey sound effects. ‘Eugene’was just one of those pieces of music that appealed to CB. An extended hard jam with a cool lyric that takes off into the ozone. Loved the vibe of this tune. ‘Cirrus Minor’ was what my buddy called “bird music” it was probably the first and last cut he ever listened to of PF. CB vegged out on this stuff with a little help sometimes. I was an album guy and would strap in for the duration and go for the ride. ‘Nile Song’ is hard and heavy and a welcome change. Would have liked to have heard this one live. Loud! ‘Biding My Time’ is in the same vein as ‘San Tropez’ from ‘Meddle’. Starts out jazzy/bluesy laid back but then it picks up and changes the tempo and rocks out with a killer guitar solo. Great tune. Lots of changes which CB liked. Another song by Barret ‘Bike’ ends the record. Loved it. Voice, lyrics, humor, vibe. “Take a couple if you wish there on the dish”
CB loved this record. Played it a lot. I was already into Floyd’s music. ‘Relics’ solidified it even more. Pink Floyd really colored the type of music CB would gravitate to. I was into Monty Python at the same time and found a similarity in that you never really knew what was coming next. It suited CB’s personality. A little unpredictable. I was definitely going to check into the Syd Barret angle and more of what my buddy called “bird music”.
A fascinating comp and I can see how it drew you in. That cover was an Australian edition – is it the one you had?

Yeah that’s the cover i have. Maybe an Australian/Canada thing.

“Relics” has here not the same cover art as my old lp version, but I think the same songs. I especially like “Arnold Layne”, “See Emily Play”, and “Bike”. Not typical Pink Floyd album, as Syd Barret sings lead on most of the songs.

“Vinyl Connection” commented on the cover. That’s the one I have. Yeah after this I went and picked up Syd’s solo albums. Listened to them a lot.

The “Relics” I own is an English import and has a very cool cover illustration by Nick Mason (a former architecture student).

I’m familiar with that cover and Nick’s work. The cover I have is the “Frozen North” edition. I made the Monty Python comparison in my take. Both groups had an illustrator in the mix.

Familiar with most of the tunes, not with this compilation. Interesting.

I have a weird CD version with 19 tracks, and I’m not sure if it’s even legal. It has stuff from Zabriskie Point and early a-sides like Apple and Oranges.

Interesting on that CD. I’m sure people still “bootleg” material. Relics really pointed me to Barret. I’ll probably do a take on a double album I got back in the day. It was a twofer with his first two solo albums. It’s all Syd and I loved them. Just listened to it a while back.

I really like The Madcap Laughs, I find the second one less memorable.

I guess because I listened to them as one I didnt separate them. Also I was getting a good fix of this 5th member of a band I was really digging. Back at the beginnings of my musical journey. I went from Meddle to striped down Syd.

For my generation, they’re generally remembered for the run from Dark Side of the Moon to The Wall – so anything before that is digging deep for someone my age.

Yeah Dark Side is a really good record. It kind of exploded the band into a new dimension. Meddle and the Live at Pompeii film was where i came in so that is stamped on my brain.

Along with early Syd stuff, I like Meddle, Obscured by Clouds, Dark Side, and Wish You Were Here best. Before that they were a little unfocused, and after that Waters took over too much for my liking.

I looked up on Discogs, and my version of Relics is a bootleg. I had no idea – I bought it in a second hand CD store and thought it was legit.

Sneaky. You still got some good tunes out of the deal. I remember some of the sketchy record stores I used to go to. All sorts of illegal stuff.

I’m not all too familiar with their albums. I like Dark Side, though, along with a billion other people. That album sold like crazy. And probably is still selling.

Being a bit of a film/music guy. Check out ‘PF Live at Pompeii’ It’s kinda cool. I’ll link it below. Similar time capsule as the CCR Albert Hall thing you sent me.

While I’m generally more fond of Floyd’s post Syd Barrett era, especially the “Meddle”, “Dark Side Of The Moon” and “Wish You Were Here” albums, I definitely dig various tunes from “Relics”. My favorites from that album are “Arnold Layne”, “See Emily Play” and “Bike”. I also like “Interstellar Overdrive”, “Remember A Day”, “Julia Dream” and “The Nile Song” – oh, well, I suppose that’s most of the album! 🙂

Nice selection, CB. As you know, I’m a huge Barrett fan. Let me put in a word for Richard Wright, though. His two songs here, “Remember a Day” and “Paintbox” are really underrated, with great melody and atmosphere. Syd’s channeled slide guitar on the first one is like a psyched-out time machine. Another great Wright song is “See-Saw,” from Saucerful of Secrets. It’s a shame he didn’t write more nuggets like these later on, but he was supposedly a lot closer to Syd, musically, than he was to Waters or Gilmour.

I hear you on that. I try to stay away from the bullshit groups carry. I have a Wright solo record and I dig it. Good nod to Richard on your take. Waters and Robertson from the Band have a similar vibe to me. Way things go. PF made great music together at one time. You have me reaching for ‘Secrets’ right now.

Oh yeah, I’m going to take a stab at Syd’s albums in the near future. Like you I’m a “huge” fan.

I don’t remember how many times I sat through “Pompeii” back then but it was a few. I love the atmosphere of the thing and always wondered how the locals reacted to that music coming from the ruins. A little mind blowing.

They don’t make gigs like that anymore.

On that ‘Echoes’ cut I absolutely still dig it when Gilmour wigs out and the band lays down that groove. I love that music. I’m building a new time machine, I’ll pick you up and will set the dial for that gig.

Definitely a album that showcases the talent that Syd had. Like Pete said some great Wright tunes also. Saw that you commented on Pompeii. I’ve seen that more times then I would like to remember. On a side note if you are a Gilmour fan check out his new DVD or CD when he played there live in 2016. They do “Great Gig” (another classic Wright song) totally different which didn’t really go over well with me but give them credit for trying but the rest of the concert was fabulous. My daughter and saw it the night it played at movie theaters nation wide.

Thanks for that. I will check it out for sure. Sounds like the daughter has some of Dads. music genes.

I’ve had this one in my collection for years but I don’t think I’ve ever dropped needle on it. I’ll have to attend to that with haste

You will have to do that. This album always takes me back to those first tastes of Floyd. Like Monty Python it bends things in a certain direction.
