Album : Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention – Over-Night Sensation

download (56)

CB’s second venture into Zappa music.  He followed up with ‘Over-Night Sensation’ after he wore out ‘Apostrophe’.  Zappa and the Mothers didn’t waste any time setting the hook deeper with the opening cut, ‘Camarillo Brillo’.  Some of these lyrics would stay with CB forever.  I wasn’t hearing this music on the radio so every song was a surprise. ‘Slime’ was FZ’s take on TV.  He nails it.  Loved the girls voices on this one.   Plus Frank rips a great solo. ‘Dirty Love’ continues on with more of what i was digging.  Frank’s uncensored lyrics and sense of humor get your attention but it’s about the music. The more I heard his guitar the more I was digging it.  ’50/50′ opens with vocals other than Frank’s.  The music moves into a jazzy jam.  George Duke, Jean-Luc Ponty and Zappa all take solos.  CB was eating this stuff up.  Ponty’s violin is a great touch.  The Mothers sound was also getting into the system.

‘Zombie Woof’ opens side two with Frank cutting lose and taking a long solo.  Like he said or somebody said “jazz rock with a little weirdness”.  ‘Dinah – Moe Humm’ takes us on a little sexual adventure Frank style.  It wasn’t going to get any AM playtime.  Love the girls’ vocals on this one also.  “Montana’ ends the album.  Frank giving us some of his great voice and some deep lyrics.  Loved Ruth Underwood vibes on this one.  Frank gives us one more guitar solo.  I couldn’t get enough of his playing.  Also dug his voice.

CB was a little bent and FZ was doing nothing to straighten him out.  His music appealed to me on so many levels.  The bottom line is that there was a lot of musical ideas going on.  Repeated listens always revealed more. Now it was head first into everything he recorded past and current.  I was hearing all this bullshit about him at the time and it had nothing to do with the great music this guy and his band made.  He could only make it one way and that was his way.  Great album.  CB was “Was born to have adventure ….”

Old time Zappa fan. What can I say? It’s a masterwork, and also a very good introduction to Zappa’s music. The band at this period is at its best, the repertoire is fantastic.

The band is great. The drums on the song below stand out for me. I remember when I listened to his music and thinking “this guy and his musicians can play” and play interesting great sounding music. I’m with you as a long time fan. I’m always pulling him off the shelf.

I’m a fan of most of all Zappa’s work. But this era of Zappa with Ian and Ruth Underwood, Don Sugarcane Harris and George Duke is my favorite. Tina Turner and the Ikettes sing on “Over-Nite Sensation”. The story goes that Ike Turner forbade Frank to credit them on the LP notes because he didn’t want people to think that they’d sing for anyone but him. I wonder if he was also miffed that Frank got them to sound more joyfully naughty on the recordings than Ike ever did.

He made so much good music with so many good players. This was a good band for sure. I heard that story of Tina and the Ikettes years after I heard the record. They sound great and do sound like they are having fun. Old Ike must have come unhinged after hearing it.

I mentioned the crew that I used to go to the Jersey shore with on your ‘Rosalita’ piece. This was the same time period (albums released literally within days of each other) so Zappa became the soundtrack for our drunken, stoner lifestyle. One of those guys was my friend Steve who literally just came up to visit from Philly last week. It is impossible for us to spend a weekend together without quoting something from this album or ‘Apostrophe.’ (The crux of the biscuit is the apostrophe.) I see you also have a take on that album. Mine will be coming up one fine day. Excellent choice, CB.

Another surprising response from you. Amazing how those Frank lyrics stick with us. Yeah and indulging in some of that medically prescribed cannabis helped things along. I was doing the same thing up here in the frozen north . Thing is you wouldn’t have stuck around if the Mothers weren’t making great music. I went on about Zappa’s guitar playing. I know you have definite tastes. How does Franky boy stack up with you? He lays down some subtle licks in the song below. Did you have a real poncho or a Sears poncho?

Frank was a superb guitar player. Loved his playing. And he didn’t really come out of the blues tradition per se unlike so many others of the time. As to the poncho quote, when my friends came up, we saw one for sale at a variety store while we were walking around. It doesn’t take too many footfalls before a good FZ reference is at hand.

“Superb” I like that because I love his playing. Distinct. Interesting on the “blues tradition” thing. When I see or hear the word poncho two things come to mind. Clint Eastwood and Frank Zappa. Also I really miss Frank weighing in on all things. He’d be good for a few quotes today.

“Dinah” certainly would leave a bad taste in people mouths. He has so much more going on than that stuff.

Yes, generally I like the music but dislike a lot of the social commentary. I generally like his jazz-fusion stuff a lot.

I was in my early teens when i discovered him so a lot of his uncensored lyrics didn’t bother me but the hook was and is always the music. The title cut from ‘Apostrophe” blew me away. Yes then his jazz/rock thing I love. I have no idea if his music is still reaching people. Thoughts?

He’s a major figure – I’m sure any music geek who digs deep enough into the 1960s and 1970s is going to connect with him sometime.

I saw Dweezil a couple of years ago at the House of Blues. He’s a fine player himself and does a great job. Interesting that he has no problem getting the ladies up to dance with him. I left after about two hours as they showed no signs of slowing down and I figured I’d gotten my money’s worth. Unfortunately, the Zappa kids have been involved in a long-simmering dispute over Frank’s estate. I’m not even sure if Dweezil can call his show Zappa plays Zappa any more.

Man do you get around to the music. Good for you. I haven’t heard of the Zappa feud. Like you said it’s unfortunate but we all deal with life. Like our new catch phrase says “It’s all bullshit”. (I see Harry over on your station will drop by and mouth off later).

I don’t know as much about Frank’s music as I should. I’ll try to remember to check out this album.

Somehow I never got into Zappa but maybe someday I will! BTW, I watched “Casablanca” on the BS last evening – even after the 10th time or so, it remains a really cool picture!

You either Love FZ music or hate it. I’m on the love side and your post is right on. What a lot of people don’t get about Frank was that he was a excellent musician and one hell of a guitar player.

It’s all about the music with Frank. I love his playing. He tosses a Little weirdness in just to mix it up.

This was a real gateway record as a kid. Frank was the sort of music my Dad and his brother listened too when the women were all elsewhere. They all kinda looked like him too with their big black beards and massive ears and noses.
Motorbike parts on the coffee table at Uncle Colin’s house. Me sat there cleaning parts or lining up washers while maintenance went on around me and Overnite Sensation On the turntable with it’s sleeve looking just as cluttered as Colin’s house.

I got Frank before I got Floyd and Dylan and the rest of the family men’s music because it was funny as well as well played. Never underestimate humour in rock. You can’t do THAT on stage anymore.

Frank appealed to a cross section of people. But I think you’re right, some (or most) of his music was kinda a guy thing (my Gal is not a big fan of Franks mindset). I used to howl at some of the lyrics but like i said above it was the music and playing that made me stay around. The ‘Apostrophe’ cut with Bruce and Gordon is a great piece of hard rock.
Great images from you on the shop. I’ve been in places like that a lot. And oh yeah nothing worse than that pretentious, take yourself to seriously bullshit. Bores the hell out of me. I was a Floyd guy first and a Bob guy later. Took a while to warm up to Zimmy.
