Last Ride For the Summer With Hank

download (17)

A lot of songs, tributes, covers and stories have been dedicated to Hank Williams.  He wasn’t around long but he made a big impression.  CB has heard many of the tributes and songs and there are some very good ones. ‘Long White Cadillac’ by The Blasters is one of my favorites. The Blasters are one of my all time favorite bands and Phil Alvin writes songs second to no one (Too CB anyway).  He pens a good one here.

This song rocks and will give you a good taste of the band ( Music Enthusiast did a take on them).  CB has a long history with these guys.  Some of the best lives shows he has ever seen.  Solid Drumming from Bill Bateman,  bass by John Bazz, saxes Steve Berlin and Lee Allen (A legend), piano Gene Taylor.  Great vocals and front-man Dave Alvin.  Fantastic guitarist (he tears it up on this one) and songwriter in Dave’s brother Phil.  Pretty much a winning line up.  These guys play straight up old school rock n roll with their stamp on it.  Great band, great song.  CB likes both Hank’s and The Blasters’ music. This one is dedicated to Hank.

“Just great!” pretty well sums it up. We might have talked about this before but Phil has that other great song about Bill Haley. ‘Haley’s Comet’. Thanks for stopping by Thom!

They really nail the Hank vibe. Great images and some great rock n roll. The Blasters do it for me. Get a chance check out the ‘Haley’s Comet’ tune I mentioned to Thom above. More country but a great story song. Phil Alvin has his finger on American music. Thanks Neil.

I’ll have to check out the Blasters’ version. I’m not much of a country music fan, but if I have to choose one artist, it would be Hank Sr. Years ago, on our bi-annual trips to the Gulf, we always passed through his boyhood town of Georgiana, Alabama. Great little museum there, in the house where he lived (on Rose Street).

Yeah “county music” covers such a wide range. Hank influenced so many players of all genres. The Blasters use his ghost here and tell a good story. (You should shoot a little doc etc on the music native to all the places you visit. It would be a great piece of Americana. I love that kinda stuff).

Is this a Hank Williams tune or in his style? What’s the connection?

It’s Phil Alvin’s dedication to Hank. Hey, you’re a musician. I guess old Hank inspired him. It’s a killer tune.
(I popped over for a second and seen your Buddy post. Will get back to it later. i think you know how I feel about a “Guy” like him).

Hank inspired a lot of people including Bruce. Nice surprise over on the Buddy trail.

I could do a big piece on Hank’s legacy. You’d be the guy for the job. Numerous songs in my head with the Hank touch. All genres. Neil does a laid back one called ‘From Hank to Hendrix’. I was thinking of listing them all but got lazy. I like the Blasters cut. It rocks. I’d be curious if Phil is going to be in the line up when you go see them. I’d also like your take on his chops.

Actually, this may be a case where CB should take it on. I dig Hank but not enough to do him justice. You’re a bigger country guy than me.

It’s funny Doc I do dig certain “country” but I wouldn’t know the majority of the popular, commercial stuff out there (It really doesn’t move me). I wouldn’t know a Hank Jr song if i heard one.
Here’s something for you. I watched a PBS special of Emmy Lou Harris at the Ryman. She did a song by Steve Earle, John Fogerty and in her words “one of the best country singers in America, Bruce Springsteen”. She did a great version of ‘Mansion on the Hill’

(Will get to Buddy later when i can give it some time. Curious).

CB another great tune by The Blasters. I’ll have to add this on onto my playlist that has been growing with lots of them since Music Enthusiast did that great post on them.

If you dig the Blasters you might enjoy the Paladins too.
