CB Flies The Canadian Flag

A lot of good bands and musicians come out of my home country.  Not the least of which is Neil Young.  Ever since he climbed into his hearse and left Winnipeg headed for California he has been consistently pumping out great music.  Neil’s a lot of things but first he is a Canadian and then he’s a rocker.  I like his music but when he straps on the electric and strangles it I’m on the moon.  How do I pick out a song from all his work? Easy.  ‘Get Gone’ with The Shocking Pinks.  Catch the Bo Diddley beat.

He might be my fave guitarist, tho that’s a tough pick.
Like you say, he can take you to the moon. And beyond!

There is something about his style that gets me. I heard him talk about it one time and it was quite funny. Comparing it with a V8 engine just before it blows a cylinder. Something like that.

Don’t read his biography – it really put me off the man.

Between Fred and Neil there is so much good music from the land of the Moose burger. Most of the stuff I like flies below the radar. Oh yeah, Fred has an album called Drive in Movie. That’s the kind of things he sings about.

Neil is one of my favorite music artists, who is both a great writer and a terrific guitarist.

While I like the rocking Neil, especially “Like a Hurricane” and “Rocking in the Free World,” I think oftentimes the stripped back acoustic Neil is even better, with just his guitar and harp. One of my favorite tunes in this department is “Harvest Moon.”

Neil’s “After the Gold Rush” is also on my desert isle list. And here’s something else: he’s more American than most folks who were born down here. Neil and Joni are two of the all-time greats.

Neil has been around a long time and consistently delivering. ‘Gold Rush’ seems like centuries ago. Joni another northern export. How about Oscar Peterson for your jazz tastes Pete.

I saw the tour that supported Trans. It was Neil solo. Pretty straight forward greatest hit with some electronic weirdness to cover the Trans material. Then for the encore he came out with the Shocking Pinks. White suits, slick backed hair – the whole works. It was a wonderful oddball ending to a great evening and a lifelong memory.

“Oddball” is a good word for Neil especially at that time. I would have loved to seen that show. I guess CB is a bit of an “oddball” because i liked the music he was making then. ”Everybody’s Rockin”, Trans. Reactor. I’m not a big video guy but his videos with the Shocking Pinks are priceless. That was a once in a lifetime show you seen back then.

That’s a rocker for sure. This is a part of Neil’s catalog I was completely unaware of.

I really liked the whole Shocking Pinks thing. I don’t know how much of a Neil guy you are but being a music historian type dude I think you would get off the the story(s) behind this stage.

I dig Neil but I’m not on the raver fan level. But he’s an important guy and I like his stuff enough to warrant a series on him one day, absolutely.

Look forward to the series. Like I said the stage this song is taken from will get the Docs attention. Doc did you get into his N Y and the Bluenotes album?

I didn’t pick it up but yeah, I had a friend who owned it and we used to spin it.

Neil has his finger on a lot of styles. Obviously influences coming from all genres for him. He doesn’t go through the motions, he puts his spin on it. ‘Ten Men Workin’. Neils a beauty.
