There are so many good musicians out in the music world. It’s a tough gig trying to get a foothold and then keeping it. So many come and go and it is so cool when you come across somebody who’s still doing it and hanging in making quality music. Guys like Colin Hay. I have two of his earlier albums and they are very good. I listen to them occasionally. But over the years I lost touch with what he was doing.
Which brings me to Mumbling About.. I stumbled onto Tony’s station (it is chock full of all sorts of good stuff and I’m still making my way through it. He kinda likes Bruce and Pearl Jam. Not a bad thing.) and a piece he did on Colin Hay caught my eye. Just the fact that he took time to give Colin some space was cool but even cooler it was an update on what he’s been doing. Still making quality music. So have a look at Tony’s piece on one of those musicians that are still doing it and doing it well. This is one of the things about tuning into places like Mumbling About… that I enjoy, it reminds me of all the good music that is out there waiting for me. Thanks Tony.
Colin Hay is an interesting artist. There is just something about the guy’s voice that draws you in. And he’s written some great tunes!
I still like the Men At Work hits from the 80s. “Down Under” remains one of my favorite pop rock tunes from that decade. It’s got a great groove. And I suppose it introduced much of the world to the bloody Vegemite sandwich. I still remember I was puzzled when I heard the song’s lyrics for the first, thinking what the hell is the guy singing about. I figured it must be an Australian slang thing! I also enjoyed and still do other Men At Work songs, such as “Who Can It Be Now” (always like the saxophone part) and “Dr. Hekyll & Mr. Jive.”
I kind of knew Hay launched a solo career following the breakup of Men At Work. I also noticed he released another solo album (“Next Year People”) in 2015. But overall, I haven’t paid close attention. So thanks for the reminder!

We don’t normally serve Vegemite sandwiches with vital fluids, but I guess in other territories you can add whatever condiments you wish. Enjoy!

If I was to go camping, would a jar of “Vegemite” be the only thing I would need for supplies?

Well, it would cover you for Vitamin B, salt, and axle grease.

Nothing like heading into the bush feeling you have things covered. I’m gone see you in a week.

I’m more familiar with Colin’s work than I am with his former band. MAW songs were catchy and refreshing. Tony’s piece captures what he’s up too. I just think it’s cool that guys like Colin are still making quality music.

Colin has made it a point to play Philadelphia pretty often. I need to check him out the next time he passes thru the area.
I’ve never seen him in concert.
Changing the subject — I saw an incredible band tonight in the Philly burbs. They are from Congo. Their name is Mbongwana Star. Check them out on YouTube if you like rocking African music.
