Music Single : Ray ‘Boom Boom’ Mancini – Warren Zevon

warren-zevon-196

Having Vinyl Connection as my guest on ‘Jack Johnson, Miles and CB’ made me think of this song.   CB absolutely loves it.  The song rocks hard and fits the topic.  Zevon had his finger on the pulse of this era of boxing.  He knew what he was singing about.  This was one of CB’s favorite eras of boxing and Warren caught it in this song.  Mancini, ‘Schoolboy’ Chacon,  Danny ‘Little Red’ Lopez, Greg Haugen, Livingstone Bramble, Alexis Arguello, Salvador Sanchez etc these guys were all great fighters when the bar was high.  It’s no wonder Zevon was inspired to write this song.

This song brings back so many memories.  Warren Zevon made great music and this is some of it.

“Hurry home early, hurry on home,  Boom Boom Mancini’s is fighting Bobby Chacon”

Never heard this song before, CB. I like Zevon. (‘Werewolves of London’ is the greatest song of all time except for the all the other ones I feel that way about.) Damn right Warren knew what he was talking about. His father was (literally) a Russian gangster and even did some boxing at one point.

I didn’t know that about his dad. He did that cool album with members of REM, ‘Hindu Love Gods’. Might have been one you missed. It has a heavy blues tinge just for the Doc. Zevon is another one of those guys that flew under the radar. “Wolves” is great and probably payed some bills.

Big friend of David Letterman’s. Used to go on the show frequently, play with the band. Made one of his last TV appearances there. Don’t know if you got Letterman up there or just spent most of your time watching Bob and Doug McKenzie.

Howdy Doody is big up here. Dave and Paul (good Canadian kid) had good musical tastes. I seen Warren’s last spot. He was a good interview on top of his musical stuff. Must have been a sports thing because he did a good song about hockey also. Letterman’s on the cut. The ‘Mancini’ cut just hits home. CB is a fight guy. That era was particularly strong. Bobby Chacon was my favorite fighter. You know I dig fringe music, its the same as sports. Boxing is as fringe as you can get. Bob and Doug are real guys.

Right! Paul’s Canadian. Unique talent. Funny and musical. Loved his impression of Cher and Don Kirshner. I’m not a huge fight guy but a friend knows something about it. We’ve gone to a few amateur bouts together.

Just to clarify, I do like a good fight, just not as big on it as you. But if I was up there and you wanted to go to one, I’d go. Country is ok as long as it’s closer to rock than country if you know what I mean. I like country influence. Disco I got nothing good to say.

I get it Doc. I like it when you vent on some of that stuff. I’m in agreement I just let you do the dirty work. “New Country” and disco are not my style. I’m sure you could say that better. Zevon was as far away as you can get from that stuff.

And if we go see that bout, we’re smoking big stogies. I don’t smoke but I can make an exception for fight night.

Great tune CB. Never heard it before but will be playing it from now on. Danny ‘Little Red’ Lopez now that is a name from the best. Loved watching him fight as well as many of the other fighters you have named.

It was a great time for action fighters. ‘Little Red’ was all action. It was hard to pick one of those guys in a fight . I liked them all. Zevon catches it all in that song. I watched that fight. Great song. Thanks for stopping by.

A great favourite from the great WZ. Such energy and punch in all his best songs plus an imagination off the scale compared to your regular songwriters.
