Music Single : Already Gone – Butch Hancock.

I remember the first time I heard this song.  I must have played it a dozen times.  Butch tells a tale that takes you on a little history trip about people losing their way of life and he doesn’t pull any punches.  CB loves story songs and this is a good one.  I could have picked a whole bunch of Hancock songs but this one fits with the post ‘Hitting a Nerve With CB’ and greenpete58’s take.  The song is 9 minutes long and worth every second to CB.  Butch is one of American musics best kept secrets.  Him and his buddies Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Joe Ely have been making some of my favorite music for a long time.  Butch knows how to string words together. Sing one Butch.  If you listen carefully you will hear the saw.  Beautiful!

    It always amazes me after having listened to music for so many years to read about a guy I’ve never even heard of. I’m not a particularly big country fan (but I do like some country rock and especially rockers who do country like the Stones.) But I have heard of Gilmore and Ely. Anyway, listening now. Good tune. I am transported to that last-call bar in Lubbock, TX.

      Too much to get into with these guys. I’m a big fan. Ely is the rocker of the group. Seen him a few times. Bobby Keys was a regular with him. Plus him and Bruce are buddies. He also hooked up with the Clash back when all that shit first came over here. Butch got tagged with the “New Dylan” thing. He is about as anti commercial as you can get. Made JJ Cale look like publicity hound. They are all disciples of Buddy Holly.

        Bobby Keys made any band sound better. Sounds like Butch has got an impressive list of friends. As to the Dylan thing, I could definitely hear him singing this tune. Buddy, of course, was from Lubbock.

        You got it Doc. I’ve been hooked into these guys for a long time. You must get this cool vibe when some of your favorite Musicians get together. That happened for me with Springsteen and Ely , they had the mutual respect thing. Plus they both are hard core bar band guys. Butch likes to play with words. he writes great tunes and can rock out also. All these guys have a social conscience. Research the Ely/Clash thing. A bit of music history.

        BTW, here’s a good Bobby Keys story. He was every bit as wild as the Stones:

        According to legend, Keys was abruptly dismissed by an incensed Jagger after filling a bathtub with Dom Perignon champagne (resulting in a debt to the band that encompassed his entire salary for the tour) and drinking most of it. Although Keys did not dispute the incident, he subsequently maintained in his memoir that he left the tour of his own volition to curtail his heroin addiction for the sake of his family.

        Doc, Ely’s concerts rivaled Bruce’s but just in real small clubs. Sweaty, boozy, intimate, loud and great rock n roll. Keys was blowing like a mad man. You could tell these guys were no pretenders and they lived hard. Grissom on guitar is no slouch. Keys just passed away didn’t he? Check tis out. You’re turning me into a tech wiz.

      Hey Doc. To your point on “country”. I hear you but like all labels it doesn’t do justice. I think I know the stuff you mean and it’s not my bag either. So many of the musicians I like have roots in that traditional stuff.

        Certainly not trying to convert you Doc. It’s like when they say certain bands are rock n roll and CB goes Huh? Let my ears to the deciding. I have this great hybrid Western/disco record that I’m going to send you.
