Movie Scene : The Deer Hunter – Bar Scene

+images-8

The boys are in the bar after work having a few.  Shooting some pool, listening to the Jukebox.  Young guys in the moment. This is their world.  Work, have a few beers, get married and go to war.  Young, bulletproof, carefree in that place where life is good before it all gets real.  These guys are friends and as the scene plays out and the music starts to build they all join in on the chorus.  CB wanted to be in that bar with them.

This is just a great scene.  Watching, CB felt part of it.  He was in the bar with these characters.  Michael Cimino directs a winner.  You believe these guys are friends.  You can feel their history.  You see the individual personalities.  They are one.  You forget you’re watching actors and feel like a voyeur into their world.  Oh yeah, you can’t help joining into the song with them.  Has Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons ever sounded better?  Like I said, a great scene from a great film.  Mom coming at the end makes it even more real.

“I love you baby and if it’s quite alright I need you baby to warm the lonely night….”

A great movie from a great era of moviemaking. For me, the iconic scene in this flick is the Russian roulette one. Harrowing. This was back when DeNiro gave a crap about being an actor. A great cast and performances across the board. We would like forward to going to see movies like this like people today look forward to action flicks.

Thanks. A few others commented but the comments disappeared into the ozone. They were on the same page as us. ( I’ll be swinging over to your station later in the week).

Mine was one that disappeared into the ether. I believe what I said was something like, This is one of the great ones, back when DeNiro gave a crap and wasn’t doing dumb “comedies.” A great cast and great acting all the way around. This film mattered. My favorite (but harrowing) scene has to be the Russian roulette one. Another ‘they don’t make ’em like this anymore’ flick. You are hitting all the right notes, CB. We are as sympatico on movies as we are on music.

The whole innocence of the scene and how life would never be like that again. I think they could have used a million different songs and they would have worked. I think it’s the only Frankie song I know because of the film. It works.

I’ve heard that the setting of the Deer Hunter begins inthe year 1967. Does anyone know how this is indicated in the movie?

No. I never paid specific attention just knew it was in and round the time. Maybe the song?

Yes the song came out in 1967 and was a big hit. Obviously the song could have played in a later year. I recently watched the movie and was trying to piece together the timeline. It ended in 1975, we know that for sure. Just seems a long time to be winning russian roulette all those years. I thought maybe it was ’70 or ’71 when the guys shipped off to ‘Nam.

I don’t know who writes the plot summaries in Wikipedia but in there it says late 1967.

Yeah he got on a hot streak with the “Roulette”. I’m pretty forgiving with timelines but I’ve heard that Cimino was a detail guy. I’ll be doing a take on the whole flick in a while. I love this scene though. Thanks for chiming in Mike.
