Danny sees his dad sitting on the edge of the bed. He wants to get some toys. His dad calls him over to sit with him for a bit. The old man is out of it, descending into madness. Danny sits on his dad’s knee. He’s worried about his dad and he’s worried for his mother’s and his own safety. Danny asks his dad a few questions pertaining to his concerns. The last question he asks is “You would never hurt mommy and me would you?”. Jack the dad answers “I would never do anything to hurt you” LIAR!
A very scary scene for CB. Not over the top but subtle and disturbing. Jack Nicholson does some very good work here. Restrained and truthful. His love for his son comes through, his resentment to his wife comes through and his losing touch comes through. Danny Lloyd as Danny also does great work (How good was this kid?). Kubrick sets the stage and Jack and Danny nail it. Goose bump city for CB. An all time favorite scene. Pretty good flick also.
Saw “The Shining” in the eighties. My impression was that of a man who thinks too much and feels too little …

That sounds like a good summation. Spends a little too much time in his head. Maybe CB should watch out for that.

I will here admit I am not one of those who is particularly enamored of this movie. A scary movie is supposed to scare me and it never for a minute did that. Yeah, I know there are all sorts of psychological implications, blah, blah, blah. But no, not a biggie for me alas, Kubrick or no. That said, it’s kinda fun to watch every once in a while just because it’s interesting.
I actually prefer the documentary Room 237 which analyzes the film for all sorts of interpretations. Space landing? Treatise about Indians? A must-see.

Wait till I give my take on the whole flick! You’ll love it. All about tastes Doc. Crazy scares the hell out of CB. I’ve known a few of them in my day. I will be checking out ‘Room 237’. Thanks for the lead.

Wait till you see Room 237. You want batshit crazy? If nothing else it will change how you see ‘The Shining.’ Hee-hee-hee.

Yeah thanks for that. This is how I find new films (and music) to watch. Recommendations like ME’s are the solid leads I have been burned by hype/mainstream reviews. I probably would’t have seen the ‘Shining if I had read one of those “blah blah” reviews. A friend of mine rented one of the new hyped movies you talked about. He is at this moment searching the reviewer out to get his cash back. “Batshit crazy” is a good term for Jack in this scene.

A real favourite film for me. One of my favourite scenes ever is when she sees what he’s been typing all winter …

That’s another creepy scene and a good one. I could have picked that one also. How about Jack and Lloyd in the bar. Not creepy but what a great piece of work. (I’m going to be getting to some of the flicks you recommended soon).

One of my favorite horror films. I read Stephen King’s “On Writing,” and he didn’t like this interpretation of his novel (surprise, surprise). I think he wanted more of the sci-fi telepathy stuff, but Kubrick made the right decision, in my opinion. There are lots of good scenes. Two of my favorites are at the beginning, when the hotel manager offers a small caveat (“There’s just one more thing we should probably tell you…”). Also, the long, hypnotic conversation with Delbert Grady (“And when my wife interfered… I ‘corrected’ her, too.”). Chills!

As a writer you can probably identify with Jack. “I corrected her”. How creepy is that? Delbert (Alex’s Dad in ‘Clockwork’) stuck in my mind also. I agree Pete, Kubrick caught some great stuff. This scene above has always stuck with me. It just hits a nerve. “I corrected her” is my catch phrase for the day. Thanks Pete.

Clockwork Orange. Now there’s another harrowing Kubrick movie. Last time i saw it they had edited down the rape/ultravionce scene. Hard to sit through.

CB did a piece on CO. (It will be back in the vaults). Yeah the beginning is a little dicey but it fits with Kubrick’s vision and story telling. Give it a re-watch Doc. Like a lot of directors he uses the same actors when he can.
