Movie Scene : The Shining – Jack comforts Danny

Danny sees his dad sitting on the edge of the bed.  He wants to get some toys.  His dad calls him over to sit with him for a bit.  The old man is out of it, descending into madness.  Danny sits on his dad’s knee.  He’s worried about his dad and he’s worried for his mother’s and his own safety.  Danny asks his dad a few questions pertaining  to his concerns.  The last question he asks is “You would never hurt mommy and me would you?”.  Jack the dad answers “I would never do anything to hurt you”  LIAR!

A very scary scene for CB.  Not over the top but subtle and disturbing.  Jack Nicholson does some very good work here.  Restrained and truthful.  His love for his son comes through, his resentment to his wife comes through and his losing touch comes through.  Danny Lloyd as Danny also does great work (How good was this kid?).  Kubrick sets the stage and Jack and Danny nail it.  Goose bump city for CB.  An all time favorite scene.  Pretty good flick also.
