Album : The Who – ODDS & SODS

download-5

CB was a Who guy by the time this album came out.  He’d started with his ‘Live at Leeds’ intro and went on a Who binge from there.  Going back in their library and then up to date with ‘Quadrophenia’.  This was a brand new release for CB.  A new Who recording.  After buying the album he found out that it was made up of out takes and rare recordings from past years.  No big deal, I was in.  Plus it had a cool cover.  It came with a poster and a bunch of liner notes with Pete Townshend giving reasons why the songs weren’t released.

What we get is Who music from different stages of their career up until the release of this album.  It wasn’t hard to hear at what stage each song was recorded.

The album starts with a John  Entwistle song.  CB always liked John’s contribution to the band and he liked this one right away.  A ‘Postcard’ from the road with Entwistle’s sense of humor.  The Who always mixed it up and this was an obvious case with the songs on this record. ‘Put the Money Down’ has the classic Who sound.  With lots of Pete’s guitar and Moon’s drumming.  Daltrey has the twang in his voice.  I really liked this one.  ‘Too Much of Anything’ is just a real good Who song.  You can hear this fitting into ‘Quad’.  The first side ends with ‘Glow Girl’ with some classic Who riffs and a little twist on ‘Tommy’

Babyhead wasn’t starving for new music by the band but he certainly was interested in anything new or that he hadn’t heard.  This album wasn’t doing anything to lessen his grip on the band.

‘Pure and Easy’, I’d had heard from Townshend’ first solo album ‘Who Came First’.  This version gets the band treatment and really comes alive.  The boys really give it the Who umph at the end.  ‘I’m the Face’  goes back to the beginning and it was like finding a lost treasure.  ‘Naked Eye’ is just a really good hard rock tune.  Pete lets loose with some great guitar.  I always liked the different members taking the vocals.  Roger and Pete share the job here.  Moon, Entwistle and Townshend make that great Who sound for the last part of the song.  “Long Live Rock’  ends the record and takes it out with a celebration of rock n roll, Who style.  Just a great tune.

CB got that this was an easy way to put a record together but at the same time he knew that the band must have lots of great songs that have never seen the light of day.   This album was proof of that.  Lots of gems on ‘Odds & Sods’.  Rock wasn’t dead and neither were the Who.

“CB took his pants off and the rafters knock….long live rock”

One of the first and still the best “rarities” samplers of the “Who”. Because the songs come from different periods, it sounds mixed, but there are good songs. “Odds & Sods” is stronger than “regular” albums of today’s successful rockbands. And the cover is just great.

Well said. Couldn’t agree with you more. Whoever came up with the cover shot it was a great idea. Love this record.

This was the last Who album I played the hell out of. I was still a big fan after but there was something about this record. A sort of tribute to what they had done but not in a greatest hits format. I’m not trying to sell this record (or any record) to anyone, it’s just that I really dug it. Still do. Check out ‘Put the Money Down’ and ‘Naked Eye’ Doc. Both under heard classic Who cuts. You’re a trivia guy so you’ll be able to match the songs with where in their discography they were cut.

I’ve got this album sitting on my shelves. Haven’t listened to it in a looong time. Your review will inspire me to give the album a spin. It’s great, like you say.

Like most the albums I put on here, I “spin” it periodically. Maybe a bit of nostalgia in there but it’s the tunes that do it. The last cut on the record sums it up for CB.

Isn’t it funny how some bands we desperately need to complete the catalogue while others a smattering is enough. I like that you got Odds and Sods thinking it was new material but enjoyed the ‘gap filling’ anyway.

That’s a really good comment. Obviously we want to like everything our favorite bands do. But sometimes it just doesn’t click. All the music and films I feature are ones i really like. I just like this album. Nowadays you can get all sorts of opinions before you listen (or watch) so it’s great, CB does’t have to make up his own mind any more. Thanks for the input VC

I’d bet there’s a real simple story on how that photo was taken. Spur of the moment. Maybe the photographer had his kids equipment in his car and had The Who put the helmets on. I didn’t really associate The Who with American football. It works for CB. (I’m going to send hotfox63 over to your piece on Daltrey and Wilko. He or she just did a take on Dr Feelgoods ‘Stupidity’)

I’m not sure I wanna know how they came up with the ‘Who’s Next’ cover.

I’m pretty sure that cover was spur of the moment. While you’re tuned in you should check out 1537’s take on that Daltrey/Johnson Going Back Home album. He also did a review on the Stones ‘From the Vault : Live at the Marquee Club in 1971’. Both sound like your bag. I listened to a couple takes off the Daltrey/Johnson. Very cool stuff.

I’m just over looking at your Dead thang. I will be checking out more of Going back Home. I’ll leave the Stones to you. I’ve been on a Steely Dan binge. How’d that happen? Oh yeah, The Who has great album covers. Just staying on topic.

This record might have got lost in their output. I have no idea what critics etc said about it. All I know is I dug it. Looking back it was an end of an era for the band. To CB anyway. ‘Long Live Rock’ Musta showed up on your radar somewhere. Thanks for stopping by.
