Movie Scene : Chinatown – Forget it Jake it’s Chinatown

Shit hits the fan in Chinatown.  Evelyn Mulwray is trying to get away with her daughter, Catherine with Jake Gittes’ help.  Problem is things start happening too fast and Jake can’t explain the situation to the cops.  They are pissed off at him and aren’t listening.  Noah Cross , Evelyn’s father and Catherine’s grandfather/father is there to collect Catherine but Evelyn is not going to let that happen.  Things play out to a bad end.  Jake watches it all unfold and is helpless to stop it.

A great ending to a great film.  Not easy to watch.  Everything in this scene works.  Story, direction, camera work, performances.  There is way too much going on in this scene for CB to get into.  Creepy and disturbing.  But a great piece of movie making.  One note.  Having this much talent on set and in one scene doesn’t always work out,  in this case it does

A great one, CB. My friend Bill will quote this one to you forever if you let him. That whole ‘California doesn’t have water’ thing is true to this day. While most of California is now out of the drought, it went on for something like four years.

It’s really hard to fault these early ’70’s films, especially Nicholson ones. I was always bugged though by that stupid bandage on his nose.

CB will be getting to the whole film one day. The “bandage” thing. That’s funny what rubs people. What I remember about that was when he got his nose slit how it made me shiver. Ouch! The scene above is so good. John Huston was a great director but his performance in this scene is fantastic.
