Speaks his mind on music & movies!

CB Takes a Cigar Break

download-1

CB is going to take a cigar break and shake things up a bit.

CB started putting his takes on music and film out into the ozone just for the hell of it.  He did it for no other reason than to “speak his mind” on films and music that have appealed to his personal taste.  That’s it.  He is not an aspiring writer, critic, expert, scholar, any of those good things.  Just a lover of cool music and  great flicks.  Along the way he has had other lovers of these two genres chime in with their personal takes.  That has been a bonus.  I have enjoyed every comment that you cats and kittens have left.

But here’s the deal.  I have checked out your various writings on the same subjects (and others) and have come away with reminders of music and film I haven’t listened too or watched for a while, new discoveries,  insights that I didn’t know, etc…  Your personal experiences are what interest me.  How the music/film moved you, inspired.  Memories of the first time you saw or heard a particular piece. Just your overall passion and love for them.  I get to hear and see through your eyes and ears.  That’s the kick!  I’ve taken something from everyone of you.  I even had a few laughs and learned how to swear.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. This is how it works for me.  I was over on catchgroove digging Axl’s stuff.  I came to a take on some album he found ‘K-Tel Funky Hits’, something like that.  I was going to skim past it but stopped for a look.  He featured a song from the album that CB has been looking for, for years.  I didn’t know the title, artist, nothing.  I knew the groove and the feel of the lyrics but no details.  It was an old AM tune from way back.  And there it was at my finger tips.  Man, it was like finding a long lost memory.

‘Why Can’t We Live Together?’ by Timmy Thomas.  It sounded just as good as I remembered it.

So you are all stuck with Cincinnati Babyhead.  I’m like a stray dog that you’ve all fed.  Thanks for doing the DO.  I’m heading over to Charlie’s place now to smoke a cigar and listen to him practice his bass.

Good post CB even if I’m not 100% sure what it’s about. 🙂 For a minute there, I thought the ‘cigar break’ was you checking out of the blogosphere for a while. I’ve seen some of my favorite bloggers just … disappear. So, glad you’ll be around for a while to share your opinions. Oh, and watch my pages this week to read about a band you should be very proud of.

Just a change a pace Dr. (I had a Weather Report album all ready to go). You’re one of my go to guys on this blog thing. By the way, I just sent you a new listener. I think he might be your style. Hey, I’m not going any where. This stuff is right up my alley. I have an idea who that “Band” might be. Don’t tell anyone but they would probably be one of my top two bands. They would’t have a song by the name of ‘Ophelia’ would they?

Maybe. Then again maybe they have a song called ‘Limelight. ‘ 😂Wait and see.

It’s possible I might have fibbed a little bit CB. Check out today’s post when U get a chance. I think U will dig it.

Like me, you are a Mingus fan. I’ve always thought that he was one of the great composers and arrangers. Despite that, many people have never heard of him.

That’s such a cool shot of Charles. Seen an interview that he did when I was kid and have been a fan since. Did you know that he ate soil, like earth? No lie. Anyways, you are one of the people I tune into. I have picked up some good stuff from your takes. I will continue to haunt ‘yeahanotherblogger’. Thanks Neil. (If you don’t have it or are unfamiliar with it check out ‘Weird Nightmare: Meditations on Mingus’. Hal Willner does a good job).

Thanks for the shoutout and love the Mingus photo. Ever listen to Joni Mitchell’s album called Mingus? One of my favorites. She was hand picked by Mingus to write lyrics to some of his songs.

Yes I dig the Joni album. Charles was definitively a different cat. He made great music. That photo kills me. Sets the craving for a cigar. Axl your stuff is fantastic, keep it up. The only problem is you keep turning me onto new music and adding to CB’s pile. ( I was doing a little exploring and found Stevie Winwood and Carlos Santana doing ‘Why Can’t We Live Together’. Really good! And I call myself a Winwood fan).

Well Spotify let me down. They don’t have it on their inventory. I was able to find the full audio on You Tube where I can sample it.

Being an audiophile I’m sure you will want to listen to this on a good player. There’s a cut on the album where Robbie Robertson reads a Mingus take on Bobby Fischer. I’m watching a Doc on Fischer tonight. Very cool. Let me know how it grabs you.

Listening to it now. I am a big Bill Frisell guy. I can’t believe I missed this. Love the Chuck D rap. His soul is not that far from Mingus – mixing humor and rage.

I was googling as I was listening and read a review that suggested that Keith Richards embarrassed himself on “Oh Lord, Don’t Let Them Drop That Atomic Bomb On Me.” No way – he was delightful. What a great album. You got me. One for my crate digging list.

Amazing what a pic of a guy smoking a cigar will inspire. I love the Chuck D cut (you will have to steer me to what work of his i should pick up, anything close to this would be cool). I like the Keith cut also ( I haven’t listened to the RS’s for years). So much bs and hype around that guy that the music he makes gets lost. I didn’t mention Bill but I thought you would dig that right away. Like I said to you before reviewers are a dodgy roll of the dice. The proof is in the listening. You make up your own mind. Have you heard Willners Disney thing? Your fellow Minny guys cut a winner on that one. I think we are on the same page will some of this music thing.

Chuck D’s “band” is Public Enemy. It is rap/hip hop. Most of it is over my head, but they do have some stuff that works for me. Check out “He’s Got Game” where they wrap over the Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” and it works brilliantly. It was on the soundtrack of the basketball movie of the same name.

Thanks for that. I will check out for sure. I’m a little familiar and open minded enough to know that there is quality stuff in this genre. Chuck D always ends up on docs I watch on certain musicians i dig. Just his work on this album is enough to make me curious.

It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back (1988) is their masterpiece. Followed by Fear Of A Black Planet. Chuck is a very articulate guy.

As for Keith, check out 1992’s Main Offender. The song “I Hate It When You Leave” is Keith at his soulful best.

Yeah I have that and I do dig that cut. I like his solo stuff. Not a huge Stones guy. I’ve glanced at your take on their new album. Always thought they should have done that a long time go. The hype that follows bands around scares me away. Proof is in the listening.

Sorry to swamp you with suggestions but it was a no brainer to mention this one. Mainly because of the Replacements. It’s more than worth a listen.
