Movie Scene : Eastern Promises – Bathhouse

download-8

Nikolai is set up to be hit in a bathhouse.  He couldn’t be more vulnerable.  He sits naked waiting for the man who brought him.  Instead two fully dressed hit-men show up to kill him.  No guns just wicked banana knives to do the job.  Nikolai soon sizes up the situation and fights for his life.  Unarmed, naked, sweaty he has the bad guys right where he wants them.

David Cronenberg has you go through the violence of the scene.  The character fights for his life.  Cincinnati Babyhead  was getting that vibe.  The scene doesn’t pull any punches, just gives the viewer the reality of the world these characters live in.  Viggo Mortensen is put through the paces and pretty well reacts and lives in the moment.  Not easy to watch, not easy viewing.  But a really good scene from a really good film.  Catch it if you can.  I don’t think Viggo will be hitting the sauna any time soon.  CB wouldn’t.

You know, I saw this movie when it came out and for the life of me I can’t remember what it was about. I know I liked it at the time but I guess the long-term impact wasn’t there. I’ll have to find it On Demand some time.

I revisited it and liked it better the second time around. Viggo is fantastic. Quick synopsis. Russian Mafia doing bad things. Real good flick!

That’s why I hung out with guys like you when I went to school. Payola for school work. ‘Promises’ has lots of twists and turns and puts a human face on what could have been a routine gangster film. performances are all top notch with a real good story.

Definitely adding it to the list. I know we liked it. And it’s really hard to find a good flick.

I hear you on finding films. CB does his takes on movies that grabbed him back when. There are new ones out there but it’s like music, you have to wade through a sea of them to get to ones that appeal to you. CB tastes are far from mainstream and commercial. Top of my head, ‘Mud, ‘The Drop’, ‘Iceman’, ‘Dallas Buyers Club’, ‘Hail Caesar’ were newer ones I enjoyed.

Loved Viggo in “Lord of the Rings” which I have not seen since those flicks came out. Of the movies you mentioned CB, I saw ‘Dallas’ which I enjoyed, ‘Caesar’ which I was a bit disappointed in, given it’s the Coen Brothers. ‘Mud’ I heard of, the other two not so much. I’ll check them out. Thanks.

Coens on a bad day are still more interesting than the stuff they pump out of “Hollyrock”. TV series that CB really dug were Breaking Bad (Soundtrack is awesome), first season ‘True Detective’ and a fantastic Scandinavian series ‘The Bridge’ best female character CB has come across. I hear Viggo’s new flick ‘Captain Fantstic’ is supposed to be good. That’s all i have.

Hollywood is all about the international audience these days. They want to see Tom Cruise (or whomever) beat up bad guys and blow stuff up. I think to your point, the good stuff is these TV serials. My son got me into Breaking Bad. I caught up on Netflix and then watched the last few seasons while it was on. Holy shit what a show!

Yeah BB is like one long feature film. So many things to like from casting non pretty people, great writing, sense of humor, real good actors, music and a great look. I found ‘True Detective’ and ‘The Bridge’ in the same league. CB doesn’t watch TV but these were the exceptions. It’s the same as music, you have to get off the beaten track to find the real good stuff.

Certain actors and directors get CB’s attention because they have strong track records and do quality work. Viggo is in that group.
