Album : Last Train to Hicksville..the home of happy feet – Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks

“I long to go back to where the space is wider, to ride some horseback and roll my own smokes..”

The first lyric CB heard from Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks.  Loved it the first listen.  My friend Tim said “Babyhead get this album.  I guarantee you’ll love it”.  He was right, I loved it.  Totally new style of music for CB.  Acoustic jazzy,country- swing with great playing (hot licks), cool vocals and lyrics with some humor thrown in.

‘My Old Timey Baby’ is just a great tune with Dan, Naomi and Maryann setting it up at the top.  Love their style.  The band swings right into the next tune ‘Vivando’.  Great lyrics and vocals with John Girton on guitar and Sid Page on violin really cook’n.  Sid’s violin did it for CB.  Card carrying violin fan for life (and a Sid Page fan).

‘Payday Blues’ is a CB fave.  He got sick drinking “Harvey Wallbangers”(and a little pissed) but he never got sick of this cut.  Maryann Price kills it on ‘Sweetheart’ with the band giving great support.  Naomi Eisenberg does a similar job on ‘Success’.  The girls are fantastic throughout the record.  Love them.  ‘It’s Not My Time to Go’ is the last cut and it’s good.  Like Hick’s character in the song.  Not a bad cut on the record.  They all fit to make a really good album.

Cincinnati didn’t have a lot of experience with acoustic music but he was getting a great introduction from Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks.  This album just got better and better all the time.

A great discovery and a real treasure for CB.  Thanks again Tim.  You’re two for two.  An all time favorite.  A lot off cool music.  Dan Hicks is the president of the cool club.  The band is in that club.

So do yourself a favor and hop at train to Hicksville (home of the happy feet) with Dan and the Hot licks.  What a sound, what a band.

“He’s dancin'”

Thanks Dan you were one of the best.

As I think you know CB, we are completely on the same page Hicks-wise. No band ever sounded like this before or since. Makes me yearn for the days when a band like this could get traction, get played on the radio. Hell, I’ve had satellite for over a year and I haven’t heard this band on there, not even once. A shame.

I never heard him on the radio ever. I know Declan is a big fan. Just like my friend Tim, I’ve turned DH and the Licks onto quite a few people. Once they get hooked into that “sound” like you say they are on their way to ‘Hicksville’. Thanks Jim. Have you ever been “Harvey Wallbanged”?

I wouldn’t say he was all over the radio but yeah, they played him. That’s where i first heard him. As to Harvey Wallbanged, I think so but dude, it was totally consensual. 😀
