Buddusky wants to buy the boys a beer between trains. He takes them to a quiet little bar he knows. The bartender gives them attitude and wants to see some ID for the kid. Buddusky starts to get pissed off and Mule chimes in and tells the bartender to “shove the beer up his ass sideways”. Then Buddusky goes off on the guy, threatening to kick his ass if he doesn’t serve them. The bartender says he’s going to call the Shore Patrol. Buddusky pulls out his revolver, slams it on the bar “I am the fucking Shore Patrol..” The boys leave all jacked up. Outside they celebrate the incident, laughing and reliving the moment with a chorus of “You are a bad-ass”.
Great scene with Nicholsen going from gentle to mental. Young, Quaide and McGovern are all in the moment feeling Jack’s heat. CB was feeling it too. Hal Ashby sets it up and the boys deliver, especially Jack. He was doing some really good work in those days. One of Babyhead’s favorite scenes. Great scene, great movie.
Hey, Jack just wanted a fucking beer.

Totally agree. Nicholson takes the breath away. Thom

The whole movie is one great scene. I think that was the last year I watched the Academy Awards. Jack was up for best actor. I lost a bet. Bit of a sore loser.

A friend of mine and I love this movie and quote it all the time. “Cheese melted enough for ya?” “Sure.” “You wanna melt the cheese for the chief?” This was Nicholson in his heyday. Do they even make these “small” movies any more?

Yes they do but you have to dig. Back in the day movies like ‘Last Detail’ were not commercially popular. You and your friend would be in the minority. Agree 100% on Jack at this stage. Love that scene you quoted. Remember the ice skating scene?
