Billy Haley and the Comets provide the opening song.  We see a drive- in diner.  Some goofball pulls up on a scooter and crashes into a wall.  That was funny and Babyhead is in for the ride.

A group of friends are spending their last night of summer before they all get on with life after school.  We follow these individuals through the night.  Cruising the strip, at the dance, trying to get lucky, working out relationships, making decisions for their futures, saying goodbye to their youth.  As the night ends they all end up out on the highway for one last drag race.

Babyhead absolutely loved this movie.  For a lot of reasons.  George Lucas tells the story over the course of one night and makes you feel that you’re part of it.  You feel like you’re in that time and place cruising around.  He showcases classic cars from the era.  Lots of beauty shots.

The characters are all distinct and the actors nail them.  All roles.  Richard Dreyfuss, Cindy Williams, Candy Clark, Ronny Howard, Paul Le Mat, Bo Hopkins, Harrison Ford.  But it was Charles Martin Smith as Toad who stole the show for Babyhead.  One of his favorite film characters.  Tapping for booze, getting lucky are two great scenes.  His overall performance is just real good.  Perfect casting.  A dorks, dork.  Toad rules.  The film has lots of memorable scenes.  Dreyfuss with the Pharaohs are classic.  Love those greaseballs.  Bo Hopkins and the boys are great.  Plus they have the coolest car. ’51 Merc coupe.

But the thing that did it for CB was the soundtrack.  It sets the mood.  Wolfman Jack rapping the intros to the songs from the radio is a fantastic touch.  Wolfman was the real deal. From Haley’s ‘Rock Around the Clock’ opening to Booker T and the MGs ‘Green Onions’at the end we are treated to some fantastic music.  The songs set the tone for so many scenes.  Is there a better use of a song than The Flamingos ‘I only Have Eyes For You’ for Debby and Toad’s tender moment.  Love it.  Like John Milner in the movie says “Rock n roll has been going down hill since Buddy Holly died”

The movie made CB feel good.  It still does.  Good reason to watch it (again).

‘Jesus what a night”

Oh yeah. Totally agree Thom. American Graffiti is good film on so many levels. It’s that personal connection you’ve talked about. Met a few of the cast over the years. All really nice folk. Charles is a sweetheart. (enjoyed your Jukebox take on Wolfman)
