Cincinnati Babyhead

Speaks his mind on music & movies!

Movie : Dirty Harry

Great opening shot of the killer on a rooftop with a high powered rifle, scoping his victim.  Along with the music, it got Babyhead’s attention and kept  it for the rest of the film.

A cop shows up at the murder scene, finds a note on the rooftop.  It reads that the killer will kill a person a day if he doesn’t receive $100,000.   It’s signed Scorpio.  So we work the case with the cop, Harry Callahan and get a tour of San Francisco at the same time.

Scorpio escalates his violence and Callahan is frustrated at the bureaucracy that will let the killer go because “his rights were violated”.  Harry won’t play the game and goes rogue to catch the bad guy.  This is the premise of the film and Cincinnati Babyhead loved it

The film had a big impact on CB.  The story was a no- brainer, he wanted the Scorpio guy dead. It appealed to CB’s vigilante side.  But it was the rest of the movie that nailed it.  The direction, music, cinematography, SF locations, violence, Clint and Andy’s performances.  It was an escape into motion pictureland.

Don Siegel’s direction should take the bulk of the credit.  Bruce Surtees’ camera work is beautiful.  You get the feel of San Francisco.  Lalo Schifrins’ music stills sounds great.  It added so much to the film.  Performances are solid.  Reni Santoni as Harry’s partner is a good piece of work.  But it’s Clint Eastwood and Andy Robinson that make another memorable film duo.  You can’t have one without the other.  Clint gives one of his best performances.  He’s perfect in the role.  His presence, delivery and commitment to the character makes for perfect casting.  You got to have a nasty bad guy and Andy Robinson is an all time Babyhead favorite.  He is crazy good.  One violent, sick bastard.  What a fantastic performance by a really good actor.

So many good scenes.  Scorpio bouncing Harry all over SF with the bag.  Mount Davidson park at the cross, scary scene.  Kids on the bus.  Kezar Stadium and others.  Lots of good one-liners.  “My that’s a big one”….

Loved this movie.  So go for a little tour of San Francisco, off the beaten track with Scorpio and Harry.  It’s a good one.

Both ‘DH’ and ‘Bullitt’ are etched in the brain. All those locations. SF is such a cool place to film. All that character. Bottom line, CB dug both films because they’re good. I see you answered your question.

Living 20 minutes from S.F. and working there for a few years at different construction jobs it is pretty cool to see some of the places that the films where filmed at.
