Album : The Best Of The Band – The Band

download (29)

This was CB’s introduction to The Band.  It opened up a whole bunch of great music.  Every cut on this album is a good one.  A mix of all that’s good in American music.  Rock n roll, blues, country, hillbilly, R&B, soul, jazz, rockabilly.  All put into a pot along with life experience, great playing, singing, song writing.  Just the right mix.  What you get is The Band.

This music just kept getting better and better the more it was listened to.  This became some of Babyhead’s favorite music and one of his favorite bands.  The music moved him then and it still does today.  Cincinnati Babyhead likes all kinds of music but this stuff is special.  Every song on the album is a winner, prompting CB to go and find the albums these songs came from and find out more about these guys.  The inside sleeve had pictures of all the LPs so he was in business.  It also had the band members names.  Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel. With Robertson writing most of the material.

I won’t break down the songs, just take my word for it, they’re all real good!  (Will be writing about the individual songs in the future) Different voices took different songs and they all work.  What a great bunch of unique, cool voices.  This music is never far from Babyhead.  It’s a staple in his listening world.  It does it for him.  Great american music.  This is real good shit!

Babyhead has been listening to these guys for a long time and will continue to do so until he kicks the bucket.

“Boards on the widows, mail by the door….  Ophelia where have you gone?…the old neighborhood just ain’t the same…”

Yup, I can dig it.

  1. Huge fan of The Band, as you know. Love Levon’s passionate lead on Ophelia.

You asked for comments on ‘The Last Waltz’ back on one of your takes. Levon sings the hell out of ‘Ophelia’ in that performance. Fantastic!!! You picked a good band to be a huge fan of. Later Ovidiu.

Oh yes. They set the standard for free flowing, organic musicality. Never topped! Thom.

No argument here Thom. They had a good connection with your friend Van. I clued into that one from the ‘Cahoots’ album. The Band and Van Morrison, are you kidding me! Top that.

That’s not odd JD. Just means you are treating yourself to some of the best music around. Always wondered what it would be like if the Boss and some others got together and did their takes on ‘The Bands’ songs. One of the things I always liked about ‘The Band’ was the unique voices that would take turns singing lead.

I’ve wondered something similar. Instead, one of them covered Springsteen.

You know your stuff. Levon does a good job. A tid bit if your interested. Pete Dexter’s book ‘Brotherly Love’ has some history about the Chicken man getting blown up in Philly. Real good book. Gritty and good feel for that underbelly side of the city. They get up to Jersey in the story.
