Album: Emerson Lake & Palmer

First album Babyhead bought. (where did he get the $$$). A friend turned him onto it. ‘The Barbarian’ is the opening cut and it nailed it.  Like a bomb going off.  Heavy drums,bass and organ.  The title fit.  The piano doing the chase then the heavy sound kicks back in. CB loved it.  New styles and sounds for him.

‘Take a Pebble’.  Is that a harp?  Great voice and lyric.  Lots of piano.  Different styles and influences.  Digging it.

‘Knife Edge’.  Great riff to open. Followed by cool voice, lyric,drums.  Heavy sound.  Cool tune.  Heavy metal?  Don’t know what that means but the song was heavy.  Frankenstein sound.

Side two opens with the Emerson guy going classical.  Sounded good to CB.  A lot of different styles were mixed in.  He didn’t play it straight.  The third part of ‘The Three Fates” kicks in with percussion and piano to make a cool sound.  ‘Tank’ has lots of different musical styles.  Mean drum solo.  These guys could play.

Last cut starts with acoustic guitar then drums come in.  Then the voice and lyrics.  “Oooo what a lucky man he was”.  Babyhead is a bit of a romantic and he really liked this song.  Great tune and it ends the lp.  Yeah he liked these ELP guys.  Liked their style.

This music appealed to CB.  His tastes were expanding and this music was opening up new doors for him.  He wanted to hear more from these guys and more of this kind of music.  It wasn’t the usual straight  head rock’n roll he was digging but he knew he liked it.  It was a left turn into some very cool music.

Listen to a great debut album and make up your own mind.  Babyhead still pulls it out from time to time and enjoys it.

“Ooooo what a lucky man he was…”  Yeah babyhead is a lucky man!!
